What's the purpose behind believing in something that cannot be proven true?

Because atheists think that theists are NOT genuine people, and they dishonour them by saying so.

I don’t like this dishonour.

What makes you think that atheists don't see theists as genuine people? I may not agree with theists but that doesn't mean I don't see them as genuine people. If fact the only difference I see is that one lacks a belief the other has.

Why is it important to prove to others your belief is right?
I know i held that view my self for a long time my self too, so i dont blame you :)
But it is a personal belief so isnt the proof in our own practice of the teaching?

My answer is: No profit/benefit.
Hence, nobody believe something that cannot be proven to be true.

Actually, this is a very good question that often arise in the mind of an atheists. A very good question because.. Often, atheists get lost into thinkings finding answer to this question.

I really like this question because there's certainly something to be gained by NOT believing in claims until any evidence supports that belief.

BUT, what's the purpose behind believing in something that cannot be proven to be true? People unnecessarily dishonor theists.

I think the person choose and believe what suits him, for example you won't expect one to be
a Muslim while he doesn't believe that pork is haram and drinking alcohol is bad, for example
one person don't believe that cows shouldn't be eaten and hence he can't accept Hinduism,
some doesn't believe that this universe needs a creator and hence he doesn't believe in any religion.

I don't know that we can actually choose to believe what suits us. IMO, belief happens on a more subconscious level. On a level we can't directly influence.

Indirectly if you hang around the right folks, read the right books, perform the right ritual enough, you might get your subconscious to start thinking belief in God is reasonable. However not something you can switch on or off because it is what you consciously want.

Friend, I don’t know from where you got this reading. Perhaps, you misread.

Vice versa, I wrote that theists have NO purpose behind being theist. So, don’t dishonour them.

In the same sense, an atheist has no purpose in being an atheist. They are more are less stuck, like everyone else, with an idea that seems reasonable to them.

I believe we choose our way of life, some choose the bad way and some others choose the straight way.

Friend, there's a big difference between "Non vegetarian” and a "Theist"

Difference is that a non-vegetarian person has a purpose behind being a non-vegetarian person. And that purpose is to eat non-vegetarian.

Whereas, "Theist" has NO purpose behind being a theist.

Friend, I don’t know what made you to give me such examples.

Friend don’t get angry.

Friend, there's a big difference between "Trapper" and a "Theist"

YOU are telling about a "Trapper” who has some hidden purpose.
Whereas, am asking about a "Theist" who has NO purpose behind being a theist.
I get irritated by silly things, I'm afraid.

As for "trapper", I really have no idea what you are talking about.

Purpose here is to stuck with the idea that seems reasonable to them. Whereas, theist doesn’t even have any such purpose, but, still they are dishonoured.

A theist by itself isn't a religion, just believing that this universe was created by God,
yes I agree with you that the theist just believing in God without purpose is meaningless.

Friend, there's a big difference between "Chooser" and a "Theist"

YOU are telling about a "Chooser” who has some purpose behind making that certain choice.
Whereas, am asking about a "Theist" who has NO purpose behind being a theist.

Theist never asks an atheist to agree with. I don’t know why atheists assume this.

Nothing my eye, Something for sure
Belief is a compelling possibility. I don't think that belief can be switched on and off.

The best you can do to inoculate belief is to inform yourself with truthful and accurate information that opposes it.

Be an investigator, and don't blindly trust sources. And look at the situation from different perspectives. Explore other convictions, and other positions.

Positive or negative evidence helps too.

One piece of evidence is worth a thousand proofs.

Of course evidence may not tell the whole story.

Saying I don't know is probably best.

Belief is a compelling possibility
It can be a compelling possibility for atheists. But, NOT for theists. Theist doesn’t require any compelling possibility after being a theist.

Neither theists compel atheists to become theist, nor they have any purpose behind being theist.
