The religious landscape changed with the time of Christ.

Yes after the end of first-century Christianity, began a worshiping of pagan sun god concepts and ideas along side of Scripture or the Christian God.
This blending or fusing created not true Christianity but Christendom or counterfeit Christianity.

As far as their getting their hands, so to speak, on Scripture, there was no way they could go against Bible canon, or which books would be part of the Bible because God is the Author of the Bible. Jesus said that from now on, there will be 5 in a house, these are 5 aspects of one human, 3 will be against 2, or 2 will be against 3.
