Why Are So Many Cops Dumb?

I recall the IQ issue from a while ago, but recently ran across this article....
Excerpted....

Jordan sued for discrimination but to no avail. Here's what a federal court ruled:

Too smart for police work, "Jordan has worked as a prison guard since he took the test."

@Wu Wei might find it fascinating that even a lowly engineer
would be rejected as too smart to be a cop. An interesting
aspect of the average 104 IQ claim is that this means that
nearly half of cops are below average (100 IQ).
So we're giving a couple hundred thousand below average
intelligence people a gun & a license to kill to civilians.
And this after training that's less than what's required
to be a mechanic, real estate agent, or cosmetologist.
Ref....
Does defund the police and lack of smart officers go hand in hand? And does this watered down system have anything to do with the quota system imposed by the Left, where shallow superficial criteria means more than depth of character and ability?

Many police forces are also eliminating the physical testing aspects for recruitment to further dumb down the system for the shallow self serving needs of DEI; dumb eliminating intelligence.

As a huge fan of the American police, I was...
I had no idea you're a fan.
Learn sumthin new every day.
....just wondering what your thoughts are on the development of the Atlanta "Cop City"....
I'd looked into it some time ago.
Training centers themselves aren't inherently troubling.
But the issue of training itself concerns me....
How?
What for?
What's omitted.
What culture is inculcated?
... and will you be planning yearly visits for your holidays or just bi-annual visits?
I hope to never visit Hotlanta again.

The former is inspired by the actions of bad cops.
Lack of intelligence is a factor in cops' wrongful acts.
To what extent? I dunno.

Meeting quotas does appear to work against hiring
quality candidates, eg, Mohamad Noor.

I favor increasing standards greatly, which
would mean fewer but better cops.

Why Are So Many Cops Dumb?

Because almost nobody who can gain admission to a “sigma target” school, and then go to work on “the street” would want to be a police officer making 80K per annum (the equivalent of a weeks pay for a good hedge fund portfolio manager). Also, guys who are really smart would continually feel that they “know better” than their superiors within a department (and they would probably be right):
I scored 98.5% on the intelligence test (which was pretty bloody simple) then had to deal with the sergeant telling me that 'wasn't ideal as smart guys don't follow orders well'.

My natural reaction (which I suppressed) was to ask him if he was sure smart guys wouldn't follow orders, or was it that smart guys wouldn't follow dumb orders.
Just so. The salient point is, an underling within a quasi-militaristic organization is not supposed to be evaluating his orders, but rather blindly to obey.

What is a "sigma target"?

What is a "sigma target"?
“Bulge Bracket” investment banks have a rating system for schools from which they recruit prospects. These are known as “Target Schools”, which are subdivided into categories; of those “Sigma Target” is the highest category, comprised of about eight to ten schools in the country (all names that you know well). In general, if you graduate from “Jackomo State University”, even with a 4.0 and first in your class, you can forget being recruited by a Bulge Bracket bank, and Hedge Funds, PE firms and the like all recruit talent from the Bulge Bracket. (That having been said, Ray Dalio went to C.W. Post College, definitely not a target school, but he made his own path, and those were much different times.)

I know of the concept, not the jargon.
(Me daughter manages recruiting
programs for such a company.
They recently added U of Mich to
their acceptable schools. Woohoo!)

Executing a no-knock warrant, you'd think
that cops should be very careful to get the
address right. Nah. They just don't take
actions with potentially deadly consequences
with the required seriousness.
After discovering they had the wrong address,
they kept her handcuffed & naked without
an apology or leaving.
Cost to taxpayers: $2,900,000.
Cost to cops: $0,000,000

One should expect that rising to detective
would mean higher intelligence & diligence.
Not so.
The same culture of impunity, brutality, &
carelessness carry over into upper echelons.
Man throws away license plate.
Thief with his plate steals from a store.
Detective looks up owner of expired plate, &
she arrests the innocent former owner (IFO).
Oopsies!....
- Plate was expired, & didn't match the car it was on.
- IFO had new plate registered.
- The thief's car is a different color from the IFO's.
- Camera shows the thief & IFO have...
Different heights.
Different ages.
Tattoo on thief (but not on IFO).

On top of this cop's incompetence, the prosecutor
continued to prosecute it despite the ridiculous
differences between the thief & IFO.

Why do detectives care so little about the
damage done by their mistakes?
Because this is the kind of applicant that
police departments will settle for, & they're
not held accountable.
Note that a federal court has ruled that it's
legal for police departments to discriminate
against intelligent people in hiring.

They didn't know any of the laws they were hired to protect? Or just not all of the laws. And is this a department problem? Or are you suggesting this is typical of all police departments.

I'm not sure if you watched the video, but the Lieutenant and the Seargeant in the videos have extensive experience and claim the following;
1) They don't know if they're allowed to demand ID for someone they don't suspect of a crime.
2) They believe they can detain someone in handcuffs if they don't provide an ID, even where they don't suspect a crime, or are threatened, because 'officer safety'.
3) They sometimes ask questions of suspects after they ask for a lawyer, because they're trying to perform an investigation.

Either they're acting ignorant, or they are completely ignorant of the laws they are supposed to be enforcing. Systemic problems kick in when people like this are not only able to be employed for 50 years (combined) but are also actively protected.

For those interested....
Caregiver for autistic boy with a toy truck
lies on his back with his hands up.
He's explaining this situation, ie, the boy
in his care is from a group home.
Cop shoots the caregiver, who asks why.
Cop said he doesn't know.

Cops can't even type a license plate correctly.
(They don't double check their work, even
when it could result in civilian deaths.)
The 2nd problem is cops' over-reaction to
situations....guns drawn, fingers on triggers,
& threats to shoot.
May this family win big $ in court.

Taze a man at gas pumps.
Sparks, gas fumes, & spilled gasoline.
What could go wrong?
Setting the man & a fellow cop on fire.
$7,000,000 in medical bills so far for the man.
There will be a suit for damages.
Deputy gets misdemeanor charge.

Cop is chasing a white 4-door car.
He loses the car in traffic, but eventually spots a white 4-door car.
It's slowing down, & pulling over for the cop.
He causes it to crash with a PIT maneuver anyway.
(Who cares...they're just civilians, eh.)
Cops threaten to shoot the couple inside the wrecked car.
Oopsies!
Wrong car.
Cops investigate themselves.
Dumb cop retires.

PIT maneuvers are dangerous.
This cop killed the other driver.
The couple above are lucky to be alive.

Cops are searching for a woman suspected of burglary
They heard she was at St Joseph Hospital.
Cops went instead to Denver Health.
They found a woman (who didn't resemble the suspect)
in a hospital bed, recovering from sexual assault.
Cops arrest & jail her til she could raise bail 2 days later.
Then cops realized she wasn't the suspect.
Later, cops agreed to drop the charges against her.
The dumb cops get to keep their jobs.

Cop shoots unarmed teen who runs from
being tortured with a taser. Cop claims
it was an accident when he aimed his
40 cal Glock at the kid, & shot him in
the hip.
Cop isn't charged.
He's not even disciplined.
There will be no accountability unless
the kid files a civil suit against the cop
& the city.

The thing that surprises me the most is that they got applicants smart enough to deny. I find that most people that want to become cops are usually in that mental bracket anyway. As dumb as I am its a small wonder I didn't think of going into it.

It might mean you have a conscious and no desire to be a bully.
