Why Do Christians insist meditation is "dangerous"?

If my faith sets you at odds with me because of my conduct, I have a huge problem, but if My faith sets you at odds with me simply because of what it is, then you have a huge problem. This holds true to ANY belief system.

Prompted by the thread "What is Contemplative Christianity?", where it has been asserted by some posters that meditation "opens one up to demonic forces"... As someone who meditates every day I find this assertion ridiculous. In the context of Christian theology, meditation is prayer. Outside of Christian tradition, as with Buddhism, meditation involves stilling the constant chatter we all have inside our heads to allow clarity of perspective to emerge. Is there any reason beyond simple superstition to impute "demonic activity" to meditation practices?

In this world, humans can sin in anyway according their own freewill. They can choose to practice dark magic, inviting evil spirits etc. Under normal circumstance, evil spirits have no right to actively enter our realm unless it's an human invitation with or without the consent of the human himself. Meditation in the wrong way can signify such an invitation.
