Why does Donald Trump hold such power over the Republican Party?

anna.

colors your eyes with what's not there
I voted for Trump in 2016 and in 2020, and if he is the Republican candidate in 2024 I will almost certainly vote for him again.

The reason has nothing to do with Trump holding some kind of strange power over me. I am willing to vote for him because I agree with most of his positions and with what he stands for.

He stands for grift, greed, powers not granted by the Constitution, loyalty over Constitution, election rigging, criminality, bigotry, ignorance, crony capitalism, sexual assault, felonious scheming, insurrections... there's more, but you get the idea.

I could forgive someone's first vote for him, but not the second, and never the third.

Most if not all of those, once again and as always, describe both sides. Without the quote I wouldn't even know which political candidates you were condemning.

Once again and as always, no they don't.

It's hard to know where Trump's still-faithful cross the line from gullible to willfully ignorant. I'd say by the third vote, it's willfully ignorant.

You are claiming the left is free of grift, greed, powers not granted by the Constitution, loyalty over Constitution, election rigging, criminality, bigotry, ignorance, crony capitalism, sexual assault, felonious scheming, insurrections...?? With a straight face??

They were willfully ignorant the first time, same as any voter.

Yup, he's absolutely repulsive, as a man, as a politician, as a leader, as an american, as a human being.
If you can't see Trump for what he is, if you look at Trump and think "Yup he's the man for me!" then you do need some ****ing help. Probably psychiatric. I wouldn't want you anywhere near me. You lunatic.

This disgusting wretched excuse for a human being, this this, gross obnoxious toxic vile man, joked the other day about Nancy Pelosi's elderly husband being attacked in his own home. I watched that narcissistic pig utter those words myself. He was giving a rally. The crowd laughed and jeered along with him. Absolute trash...

What a crock of crap...the left had nothing to do with Maga insurrectionism or any of that other drivel you projected.

Strawman much? We're talking about political candidates, not "the left." And if you can't tell which political candidate is willing to do all of the above to maintain his power, than you can't be helped. Just outvoted.

They were willfully ignorant the first time, same as any voter.

Speak for yourself. Not every voter is an ignorant voter.

I agree but there was no false equivalency. The two sides are equal.
That's "false equivalency", and it's a disingenuous tactic to cover up one's own bias so as to defend that which should be morally indefensible. If you can't tell the difference between Trump and Biden, the Pubs and the Dems on the basis of honesty versus dishonesty, well I don't have to even finish this sentence.

BTW, I used to be a Pub.

Been a socialist ever since I could appreciate the differences between capitalism and socialism.
Yet it's not because I am a socialist I despise Trump. He's just a terrible person. Vindictive and stupid and in fact an absolute perfect example of what every man should aspire not do in any given situation. If he was an avowed socialist, I'd still call him out for what he so clearly is, a nasty piece of work.

Well said!

I was raised in GOP conservatism. I left the GOP pre-Trump, in 2012.

I didn't know what I didn't know for a very long time.

Republican politicians believe that they must have the support of the idiot base that the republican party has been pandering to for decades. So they continue to pander to them. But now so are their republican rivals, so they are all trying to 'out-pander' the other guy. Which is why they are becoming more and more and more absurd as time goes in. Trump became the mascot and hero for all these idiots that the republican party has been pandering to for so long, and he used that to win an election no one thought he could win. And then to take over the republican party by using that idiot base lie a weapon against any other republican that didn't bow to his every whim. And so they bowed, and bowed, and bowed, and bowed. And they are still bowing to this idiot base and it's idiot leader, Donald Trump. Because they are all afraid they will lose their elections if they don't pander to that idiot base. And by "idiot base", I mean that collection of people that are not particularly beholding to reality, and instead prefer fanciful lies and false promises and ego-stroking and magical thinking, righteous outrage and all that sort of internalized self-serving nonsense.

Yes, and we always need to remember that tens of millions still support him no matter how much evil he says or does, and a large percentage of them belong to the "religious right".
