Why is the AR-15 Legal?

The AR15 is semi-auto.
Even if he had an AK47, it would also have been a civilian version.
The special license for a full auto / select fire weapon is spendy & highly restricted.

I think, in IMO, any semi-automatic weapon could be equally deadly. So no real point in banning the AR-15 unless you ban all semi-autos.

Two Glocks, 33 rounds each, that 66 shots before having to reload.

I am not sure why we are getting into those details. Gun terminology is something I am not familiar with. I just said I would ban all automatic weapons. Semi-auto is still auto. I do not know how to define my terms in gun lingo. The AK-15 should be banned, for example.
I'm a pedant about knowing exactly what we're banning.

Me either really. Kind of why I started the thread.

Pretty much requiring us to go back to bolt action rifles and revolvers. Why would a person need anything else for personal protection? Or hunting for that matter...

If that's the argument....

Whose military uses 40 S&w, 357 Sig, etc, etc?

They are both in the .40 caliber category. As is the M1911 pistol - Wikipedia which is standard military issue. I own a 1911 myself. Also specifically .40 S&W is commonly used by police departments across the nation.

As I said before there are lots of bullets not commonly used. But the vast majority of calibers is used by both civilians and military.

Here is a good example. I have a .45 cal 1911. It's my everyday conceal carry. I carry it 100% legally as a licensed civilian. But what is not legal (at least what is not easily legal to own) is a Thompson submachine gun - Wikipedia or more commonly known as the Tommy Gun. It uses the same bullets as my 1911, the .45 acp. But because it is fully automatic it is not for civilian use even though it was used in WW2 by the U.S. military.

So the epidemic of gun death in your country is the intended outcome?

And you think this decreases the gun industry’s liability?

Nope

Because it is not a malfunction created by the manufacturer of the gun.

The malfunction is in the user of the gun. Manufacturers are not liable for that.

40 S&W is not the same caliber as 45 ACP.
The 1911 is 45 ACP.
Police is not military.
.222 is not .223.

Don't know the terminology, but the intent is allowing only rather simple hunting and personal protection weapons.

Understood.
It can get complicated...
full auto, semi auto, select fire, burst, double action, double action only, single action,
Glock safe action, recoil activated, gas operated, New York triggers, set triggers, etc, etc.

No

Semi-automatic firearm - Wikipedia

Automatic firearm - Wikipedia

Semi- auto = 1 trigger pull = 1 bullet fired. Holding down the trigger still only means 1 bullet being fired.

Full Auto = Select fire = 1 trigger pull = a volley 3-5 bullets fired or 1 trigger pull = 1 round or holding down the trigger fires as many bullets as you want until you mag is empty, all depending on which setting you have selected.

Full Auto is heavily regulated and not easily available to most citizens. Most shooting by a full Auto is a full Auto purchased illegally on the black market. For instance gang violence in Chicago, most gun violence there is from black market weapons.

If the gun is designed to kill people, then killing people is using the gun as intended.

BTW: cigarette companies weren’t sued for malfunctions, either.

.222 is not .223.

.45 acp still count as .40 cal category or if you round up it's in the .50 cal category, either way the military and civilians can still use both calibers.

But .222 and .223 is in the .22 caliber category though just as .22LR is.

The police are not military. But they are not civilian either. They are allowed to use military grade weapons though. So they count as military in my book.

Nope they were sued for lying about how dangerous cigarettes are to a persons health.

Gun manufacturers never said, "buy my guns they are not dangerous" like to tobacco companies did.

Also a gun is not intended to kill people per say. I have owned guns my whole life. The only living creatures I have ever killed is 1 deer, and 1 squirrel. So you can't say it's intended purpose is to solely kill people. Although that is a possible outcome.

It is made with the intention to safely/properly fire for the user when the trigger is squeezed. The target that gets hit is solely the users responsibility. The manufacturer is not liable for the target a user chooses.

So long as the there is no malfunction in the firing of the gun, a law suit is just a waste of time.

Let me ask you a question.

Say we do ban all semi-autos.

How does this help reduce guns obtained through the black market?

Because a ban would just move the cheaper semi-automatic into the black market, and only the criminal type will purchase them.

There is no "rounding" up or down of bullet diameters.
Even .001" is significant.
Having the term "caliber" in common is irrelevant.
Perhaps your shooting & weapon systems design experience is very different from mine.

Yes even .001 is significant. But it doesn't change the fact that military and civilian use the same calibers. Different grains, shapes, and/or different metals used in the production of the projectiles can vary of course, depending on what specs a customer wants.

Caliber - Wikipedia

"While modern firearms are generally referred to by the name of the cartridge the gun is chambered for, they are still categorized together based on bore diameter. For example, a firearm might be described as a "30 caliber rifle", which could be any of a wide range of cartridges using a roughly 0.30 inches (7.6 mm) projectile; or a "22 rimfire", referring to any rimfire firearms firing cartridges with a .22 caliber projectile."

My experience comes from years of owning, shooting, and working on various "guns". I even dabbled in gun smithing for awhile. Before I decided I would rather just keep it as a hobby rather than make it my profession. I can talk about guns all day and hold my own.

a ban would just move the cheaper semi-automatic into the black market, and only the criminal type will purchase them.
...and presumably love sick jilted teenagers will have to resort to more primitive, less efficient and less deadly methods of venting their irrational frustration...as far as I am aware the "criminal types" that purchase weapons on the black market are not generally known for school shootings.

But I am pretty sure the answer is not as simple as that, so I have come up with another alternative...shoot everyone who attempts to purchase a gun. That'll fix it I reckon.
