Windows 10....Evil Cancer

Microsoft evil does do that. I had to say "no" and again "no" to the 'accept the terms and conditions' to get it off my wife's computer. I had to tell it "no" and "delete" and "go away" when it tried to update my ancillary netbook. This kind of evil on the part of corporations had me a believer in strong government to oppose such corporate dictatorship.

By the way, Windows 10 installs a lot of bloatware and spyware by default. The bloatware can be made to go away but it's not easy and potentially impossible with the home version. The "phone home" spyware can't be turned off as security researchers have found but I managed to shut off a lot of that (expletive) with a lot of internet researching.

Microsoft's attitude toward the spyware is "trust us, we're Microsoft and we're here to help you". - (Conservatives might find an echo in what they believe here).

Now something called Cortana wants to be my bestest buddy, & ask it questions.
Cortana means well, her voice does sound rather friendly. One of my goals is to make these companions smarter. I've managed, somewhat, shes a work in progress.

I was forced onto windows 10 almost immediately, plus I have to use a Mac on top of that. For work, I don't have much of a choice kinda like your spontaneous upgrade lol.

Make a system image backup ASAP and archive it as "Initial Win10 installation" or something so if you screw it (knowing you), you can just restore it. I made a system image backups one for Win7 before the upgrade, one for Win10 first installation (was the first retail buggy version), and last but not the least for the last updated version of Win10 (1511). They say in July there's gonna be another major core update for Win10. Gonna make one more before that update.

Make sure you current Windows 10 version is no older than 1511 or you could face serious bugs, and they won't be lady bugs.

So I was rummaging around in RF, when suddenly my computer shut down & started installing Windows 10. As this unexpectedly & automated process takes place, I'm on my phone now.
Weird.
I was so happy to get rid of Windows 8 that I installed Windows 10 at my first opportunity.

Well, Windows 10 got my laptop..... I did not close the prompt correctly because I was in a hurry.... It was going to install in 8 minutes...but I ahd the option to put it off, so I did, for 8 hours. Then I started to back up all the stuff that needs backing up....8 minutes later it rebooted me..... then came back up as Windows 7..... but the impending Win 10 update is still on its way....

But then all this really means is that, once backup is done, that I will be taking my laptop down to the hard drive and reinstalling Windows 7 Enterprise, or maybe, just maybe, since I should be familiar with the dreaded Win10, I may make it Win10 Enterprise. But first I need to see how much of an impact Windows 10 has on my poor old laptop, which at the time of purchase was a beast, but these days...not so much

And it is not a cancer...its the Borg.....

What more is there to say? Getting a proprietary OS is like buying a dolls' house. You can change the decorations, but not the basic design. Linux is like Lego: it can be assembled into whatever you want. We don't all have the same computers and use the same programs to do the same things.

The basic system (the kernel) is very small, hence its use in routers, TVs, phones, etc. Programs share their libraries, so the complete system is small. The user-interface is just software, so you get a choice: plain, fancy, big, small, weird... If you get all your software from your distributor, then they take care of all the security patches and bug-fixes. And distributions can have an awful lot of software: no searching the internet for something that actually works and isn't malware.
