I'm not saying it doesn't happen, I am saying it is different. Being afraid of fire, or a car accident is different than being afraid of people.
Interesting, those who are against guns are the ones afraid of accidents with guns.
It has a much different and more profound effect on you when you start looking at any random person as a potential threat.
And you don't think college aged women don't often have to look at some random people as threats? How often do they get blamed for being sexually attacked or harassed? (Should have been more careful, more wary, dressed more conservatively, etc.)

And I don't have to tell this to people who have been attacked. They already know this.
Have you spoken to women about the prevalence of sexual harassment, getting groped, etc? I've found that there is a large percentage of men who are totally clueless as to how prevalent it is.

I don't think anyone is belittling the issue of rape, but do you think it's reasonable to expect women to shoot their dates, friends, husbands etc. when they don't take no for an answer? Surely there is a better way to deal with the issue. For example, by police and campus security to take the threat seriously enough for rapists to have to worry about the consequences of their actions.

What is the response time for authorities to respond, that is if a call for help is even heard.

Wouldn't more people carrying guns make people think twice about the possible consequences of their actions without having to build up an expensive bureaucracy?

Nothing says respect louder than the real possibility of a target carrying a Smith & Wesson.

I lived on the most notorious block in Canada - Main and Hastings in Vancouver. Full of prostitutes, drug addicts, dealers, homeless people and other broken people and had no fear of walking alone at night. That was during the time Robert Pickton was murdering prostitutes. It isn't a nice place to live, but it's really not that dangerous unless you are putting yourself in danger, for example by prostitution and doing business with street dealers.

Very true most people are killed by people who know them. Also if the rare murder and rape by a stanger does happen. A gun may or may not be of any help. A cop told me that the way some perverts are grabing women now. They come up behind them use a taser then throw them into a van.

Same is true of bears. A few years ago a man in Alaska was killed and his gun was right next to him leaning on a tree.

I sing songs to let the bears know I'm coming. They're generally not aggressive unless you surprise them. It's quite a thrill to see them up close, though, isn't it! Feels kind of like a lucky narrow escape, even though the likelihood of attack is quite low.

I just call out hay bear my singing sucks.

We must recognize that there is no magic bullet to prevent rape. It will happen even when women (or men) take
every reasonable precaution. So I won't deny anyone their right to self-defense just cuz it ain't a guarantee.

Why wait to be rescued when you can probably just kick him in the junk and leave? It's super-effective.

There are also other strategies, like avoiding situations that increase the likelihood of assault, such as passing out at a party, or being alone with a guy you have doubts about, don't know very well or don't trust. You can also reduce the probability of being singled out by violent predators by walking confidently with your eyes up and looking like you know where you're going.

It is an education issue, IMO. Boys and girls need to learn no means no and learn they must be cautious in certain situations.

I don't pack a gun and I have never felt a weapon is necessary to make others respect me, except perhaps a killer smile and my razor sharp wit! :D

Sorry but those who have Guns are the ones who them and family members die from guns. As a child I was raised around guns. I hunted and killed (and even gutted) both deer and boar. I don't really want them around now. My son has one he inherited from his grand father. I let him have it but I hope he grows out of it. Any one who has a gun and is not a concerned about an accident is a fool. Just like your a fool for not being careful with a radial arm saw.

I don't want to take you guns away. I just don't think concealed weapons on college campuses is a great idea.

Just some useful info.

"About 85 to 90 percent of sexual assaults reported by college women are perpetrated by someone known to the victim; about half occur on a date. The most common locations are the man’s or woman’s home in the context of a party or a date. The perpetrators may range from classmates to neighbors.

Half of all student victims do not define the incident as “rape.” This is especially true when no weapon was used, there is no obvious physical injury, and alcohol was involved — factors commonly associated with campus acquaintance rape. This is one reason rape and other sexual assaults on campus are not well reported.

Fewer than 5 percent of completed and attempted rapes of college students are reported to campus administrators or law enforcement, according to one study. Failure to recognize and report the crime to law enforcement officials may contribute to underestimating the extent of the problem and may affect whether victims seek medical care. However, those who report in other contexts, such as through a confidential reporting system, are more likely to seek medical or counseling services."

All I am saying is that you can't compare a gun to a fire extinguisher or a first aid kit.

I am not dismissing the very real problem of women's safety on college campuses.

There is a shared trait in that all are intended to be useful in the rare case of some adverse event.
In my truck, I carry a handgun, 2 fire extinguishers, a first aid kit, tire chains, tools, a spare tire,
chocolate, bacon, spare clothing, steel toe shoes, gloves etc. Some of us prepare for bad times
more than others, & the handgun is just part of my kit.

Bacon is no good if not cooked. What do you do, put it on your muffler and drive around the block a few times?

I carry a packaged & preserved cooked bacon which will keep for years.
It's spendy, but in a pinch it's there.

When the you-know-what hits the fan, you will need the firearms to protect the bacon.

And even then the bacon will only last so long ... :(

Gotcha. :beach: I hope I am in the car next to yours when the zombie apocolypse hits.
I do carry some wicked groundskeeping tools, especially a customized machete. (Mine is very very sharp.)
