You're an atheist just like me.

I'm an atheist and so are you. Here's why. If you're Christian, you (more than likely) deny the existence of the god of Islam and visa versa. Welcome to the team.
I believe in one God. You believe in no God. Enormous difference.

Welcome to the forum, Log Dog!

Welcome to the forum, Log Dog!

That really isn't my point. Do you believe in Zeus? I'm an atheist in regard to Zeus as well as every other god.

Thanks for the welcome. Cheers.

I believe in Zeus. And the Abrahamic God, Egyptian Gods, Celtic Gods, and pretty much any God that has ever worshipped, I believe in.

So I guess I'm not atheist :)

And Santa Claus? And the Tooth Fairy? What about the Easter Bunny? Do you believe in them?

Sure, why not? They make children happy and what more can you ask for?

I'm not sure how to ultimately respond to someone who wishes to deprive people of their happiness, telling theists that they're atheist, and telling children that the Tooth Fairy isn't real etc.

I'm not sure how to respond to an adult who still believes in the Tooth Fairy. Sorry.

Ultimately, it's not about the Tooth Fairy.

Is an imaginary friend real to a child? Is a hallucination real to the hallucinator? Is God real to a theist?

Psychologists use the expression "shared view of reality" when discussing mental states. When someone's reality is not shared, does that make the reality a false one? I don't think so. A hallucination may be a product of an imalance of neurotransmitters, but the experience of it is undeniably real. And isn't that all life is, an experience?

A child certainly experiences that imaginary friend, even if it's just a fantasy.

That's okay. Try to be at peace with it.

I know what your point is. I'm just taking issue with it. :) An atheist is someone who doesn't believe in any gods. A theist is someone who believes in one or more gods. I qualify as a theist; you qualify as an atheist. Do you want to talk about something else now?

To a child, an imaginary friend may seem very real. But as that child develops, he learns the difference between fantasy and fact.

Hallucinations can also seem undeniably real, but only for the moment and only within the confines of the individual. Once the hallucinations cease, the experience can then be understood for what it was. Chemistry of the mind. Nothing more.

To a theist, I suppose the experience of god does seems real. But tell me, what makes the experience of god any different from that of an imaginary childhood friend?
