I have a daughter and a son-in-law [both atheists] that are senior research scientists at the world renown Sanger Institute here it the U.K. working on DNA and the gnome.
I will not debate on DNA because I am not an expert on this highly complex subject. If however you are an expert on DNA then...
O.K. the virgin birth, will that do? Or dead people coming back to life maybe.
Perhaps you just cherry pick the bits of the bible that fit in with your ideas of what's real and what's a parable?
The religions of the world, when looked at in the light of modern science are literally unbelievable. Often on debating sites like this one we get reminded of all the crazy stuff we are asked to believe in by the theists. The flood, Mohamed flying up to heaven on a winged horse, talking snakes...
People that believe in the supernatural worry me a little too....but not a lot.
And you say we atheists can't back anything up!
No offence taken
There is no need for faith!
In fact faith in a God is not a good thing. Its a bad thing. It is instrumental in getting people believe in things without evidence, without logic, and without proof.
God gives me a brain. I use my God given brain to examine the evidence for the Biblical flood. My God given brain shows me that it is scientifically impossible to the point of absurd.
Something does not add up here me thinks.:sarcastic
Jehovah's witnesses take the flood story literately. You could talk to them? :)
The scriptures do seem to say that the water covered the whole earth but the flood story can only be a fairy story.
Mount Everest is 29,029 feet above sea level. That needs a lot of water to cover! And the argument...
Thank you freethinker, I was beginning to loose the will to live here!
The first line of my thread, [not the heading for which a am doing a penitence as I type this] says 'If the God of the bible or the Quran was all powerful’
Argument for arguments sake and nitpicking seems to...
So God gives me this brain. And my brain tells me not to believe in something unless it is logical, makes sense and is backed up by good scientific evidence. In other words I dont have faith because my brain tells me not to believe in supernatural nonsense.
God sure does have a sense of...
I got the message and after apologizing from the bottom of my heart what else do I need to do here?
I will never make a tongue in cheek comment again or try be anything but deadly serious from now on.
Hope that's O.K.?
O.K. why has God set a seal on my heart then. What have I done except not listen to you tell me you are right without any real evidence? And if an angel slaps me on my face I will first go ouch! and then listen to him. I am an atheist not an idiot.
What I would like to know is this. For many years I have debated with Christians and have had some very good debates.
Then about a year ago I got my copy of the Qur'an and started trying to understand this religion and debate with Muslims but it’s a very different experience. As can be...
Wow saint_frankenstein! Way to ignore what I said.
I was aiming my comment at the God of the Bible and the Quran as is clearly seen in my thread and a later comment.
If the God of the bible or the Quran was all powerful then he would have no need whatsoever for prophets. He would just contact us directly and save all the misunderstanding we have today about religion. This makes even more sense now as all he needs is our email address. :)
But if religion is...
Organised religion also reinforces the faith of its followers. Meeting regularly with fellow believers keeps an individuals faith strong. It also discourages members looking at other religions. The members socialize with each other and the friendships that develop are within there own religious...
