It can be easily proven that an omniscient, omnipotent, benevolent god cannot exist. All others are not worthy of worship. What a god can do is strictly determined by what religion created this god.
I would say we have bounded free will, i.e. the choices we make are bounded social rules, and mores, family tradition, man-made laws etc. In other words it is constrained free will.
There are many other examples. People on both sides of a war praying for victory, a thousand peolpe praying to get the same job(common in this economy). Again it makes little sense.
There really is little biblical support for hell, or a place of everlasting punishment. Any god that would torture someone for eternity is not benevolent.
The idea that a "prayer" can be answered really is illogical, in that you have millions of people making prayers that would go at cross purposes. For example, one person praying for rain may nean another person would no longer get their needed rain.
A politician is commiting political suicide if they claim they are atheistic.
The slogan "in god we trust" should be removed from all public places, coinage, etc. as being unconstitutional.
A better slogan would be "freedom of belief".
Considering what we ahave done to other species on earth, i.e. driven many to extinction, it probably would be a good idea to not advertise our existence. We can't assume an intelligent species capable of interstellar travel would be benevolent.
"I just don't see atheism as 'having to hide' anymore, and feel that tide turned long ago. Like early 20th century if not earlier than that.
"
You don't have to hide, but many people don't accept the atheism well, making it preferable in many cases to keeping silent about their beliefs.
Since you're traveling at the speed of light, "radar" is useless, as the signal would reach the object the same time you would, i.e. you could not see objects in advance so you could not avoid them.
