Downside to atheism here in the states: You're in a religious minority. Of course, as a Jew I was used to that, so it doesn't bother me much, but still.

I was Greek Orthodox, so I was in a religious minority before, too.

You reminded of a philosophy professor I had in school, though. He was a Jewish guy from New York, and he said when he moved to the South he thought the missionaries would leave him alone if he just told them he was Jewish, "but I found out a Jewish soul is worth twice as much."
