I learned from on of the "big fish" tonight...that my trip to Ninevah might be coming to an ending soon...we need confirmation from the "Big Kahuna"....but when this happens..."Avi's Thread" will be back in business.....get ready to...PARTY...:D

I hope you didn't go to the actual Ninevah as I'm pretty sure it's under ISIL control ATM.

Thank you, Sunrise...I'm afraid we've hit a small snagfu and are back to our original return date of Nov. 6....with the Ninevites being restless...there are just too many things to do....you see we have to educate these people....somehow they mistakenly believe westerners are more ethical and moral than they are...lots to do in so little time. ;)
I'm looking forward to a detailed trip report.

I would prefer to hang out in Miami Beach...but it appears it is going to be up to whichever of the whales currently circling our boat decides to eat me...you see in anticipation of this I have been consuming massive quantities of garlic...so I stink...:D...and any whale that eats me...will get a big stomach ache...;)

How very Biblical :)

In my wild youth, I once consumed a dish with 1.5 heads of garlic in it being confused about cloves and heads at the time. No stomach aches but my friends could smell me coming a mile away.

My wife is from Sicily, and there's a pasta dish whereas you put an uncooked tomato sauce on top of the pasta that is super heavily laced with garlic to the point whereas it"bites" (burns).

I used to bowl in a league on Tuesdays years ago, and once time my wife forgot and made that dish. I brought a lot of mints with me to the bowling alley, but finally one of the guys on my team say "Give it up-- you reek as it's coming out of your pores!".

If Avi uses this thread to be at times just humorous, I don't see why you feel the need to police what is posted on this thread.

Hmm I recall not getting positive feedback for doing exactly that, so not really sure what your point is.

Every point doesn't have to be argued with or agreed with, but an indication that I'm not wasting my time researching things is nice too.

Thank you Paar...please keep in mind that Avi's Spiritual Journey is not necessarily the same as Paar's journey. One might, for example, be interested in the ethical and moral aspects of the Quran and the other...The Three Stooges. But in the end...we all hope to hit the jackpot....and get the 70 virgins. :D

Btw...can you meet me at the dock when I arrive at Ninevah ? :D

Or the 70 white grapes/raisins depending on translation.

That's a heck of a translation difference, Sunrise.:D

I read this argument many years ago. It is of course not a common translation but such differences appeal to me

For example, the Koran says martyrs going to heaven will get ''hur,'' and the word was taken by early commentators to mean ''virgins,'' hence those 72 consorts. But in Aramaic, hur meant ''white'' and was commonly used to mean ''white grapes.''

Some martyrs arriving in paradise may regard a bunch of grapes as a letdown. But the scholar who pioneered this pathbreaking research, using the pseudonym Christoph Luxenberg for security reasons, noted in an e-mail interview that grapes made more sense in context because the Koran compares them to crystal and pearls, and because contemporary accounts have paradise abounding with fruit, especially white grapes.
