Boys will be boys, so get used to it. . . Rape that is.

"After having been encouraged by a classmate, a female student went to the principal of the high school to report that she had been raped by another male student in February and March 2011.

The student reported the school to the Schools Inspectorate (Skolinspektionen), which has now forwarded the complaint to the Equality Ombudsmannen (Diskrimineringsombudsmannen - DO).

According to the complaint filed with the Schools Inspectorate, the student was told by the principal:

"You file a police report if you want, although this is not a prioritized case as no serious crime has been committed."

The principal then told the student, who was accompanied by another member of staff at the time:

"Guys do this kind of thing, you have to get used to it."

According to the report, when the girl's mother called the principal to discuss her comments, the principal told her that her daughter "should concentrate on her studies" and "to stop focusing on these trivialities"."

What country is this originally from?

So she's basically raped all over again, emotionally. That principal needs to be terminated and legal action taken against the school district.

Stockholm, Sweden.

The article only reference the complain containing statements from the girl and her mother. It would be interesting to hear the principal's response and what else the investigation turns up. There's a lot of information missing from the article that is necessary to draw an accurate conclusion.

I would like to see a follow up on this story. Like CaptainXeroid said, there is information missing here. I would like to know exactly what happened. Because if this was really rape, the principals statement, and the non-action of the other staff member, are just dumbfounding.

To me, it just seems like something isn't adding up. I have a hard time thinking that basically a school itself would be so dismissive of a rape allegation.

Considering how quick you can end up in a swedish prison for just looking wrong at a woman this story seems odd.

Why are people disbelieving this story?

This happens everywhere, every day. Rape survivors are disbelieved, belittled, blamed, encouraged not to seek justice, ignored... I'm not going to feign shock and outrage here, this is the same ****, different day.

The entire school district? The principle should be terminated, but until you prove that this happens all over the school district, or there is a policy that orders this type of advice, then you have no grounds against the district.

Furthermore, if the police don't think its a serious crime, then they won't do anything against the principle, let alone the school district. That is where you should start, instead of attacking a symptom rather than the cause.

We are not fully accepting this story as we don't have all of the information. We want to know the details before condemning people.

I think that Principal needs to lose his job. Rape is not and has never been a triviality!

That is exactly why I would like to have more information on this story. I know in much of the United States at least, if one is accused of rape, that is basically a conviction and people treat that person as a rapist.

I did a study in my state regarding rape and the accusation among high schoolers. What I found is that people who took it more lightly (or even joked about it), usually the actual case was statutory rape, or sexual harassment. Both of which can be serious offenses, but different from what rape makes us think of.

It's simply dumbfounding that such a response would be used for even verbal sexual harassment. I think some sensitivity courses are in the principle's near future, as well as a job hunt.

As someone who's worked with rape and sexual abuse victims. I wish it was so easy.
A friend of mine who works specifically with children had to sit in a courtroom with a child while the child's father - the abuser - literally blamed a 12 year old for seducing him and then framing him by putting child porn on his computer. And then the child's adult step-sister backed him up.

Rape cases have such a low prosecution and a low conviction rate because it's still considered fair game to blame the victim for asking for it. (Or the "you must have wanted it because you were wearing jeans and he couldn't have taken them off you without help" conclusion. *gag*) A prostitute isn't ever going to get taken seriously as a rape victim, never mind that she's probably one of the most vulnerable people to the crime.

And men are also falsely accused each day. So yeah, it takes some evidence to verify, especially when a school administrator is accused of saying boys will just casually rape someone.

Please re-read the article and you will realize it only presents one side. Asking to hear the whole story does not rise to the level of 'disbelieving.

Even with just one side of the story, dismissing the incident and the remarks the principle made are very inappropriate, even for verbal sexual harassment. Granted there are many false accusations, but even so this is something that should never be handled so lightly.
