College Orders Student to Alter Religious Views on Homosexuality, Or Be Dismissed

You cannot state that Buddhists, Hindus, Moslems, Jews are mentally and emotionally ill just because they do not believe in Jesus. :areyoucra
You can state anything you want. However it may be use in forming opinions of your level of mental competence. :)

And the school has their own reputation to look out for. What do you think will happen to the schools image if they graduate someone who is constantly getting fired for her refusal to treat homosexuals and transgendered individuals with dignity?
Exactly. To give this woman a degree would be a failure in the university's obligation to its competent students and the esteem in which their degrees are regarded. It would be a failure in their obligation to the future clients of their graduates. And it would be a failure in their obligation to Ms. Keeton, to whom they owe an adequate education in her chosen field -- if she'll have it.

Well, I wish we knew the context in which "reparative therapy" was discussed. If she's an advocate of that kind of malpractice, I don't think we can have any real confidence that she would recognize her limits at all. Judging from the way this usually plays out, she and others would use her degree as evidence that there was some scientific basis for practices that are unprofessional, unscientific, and extremely harmful.
Going on the basis that she made enough of a scene over this to get media attention, she is probably one of those who believes that praying to God will cure homosexuality, and that this cure is unhealthy repression and denial. And there are far too many quacks out their with Masters and Doctorates degrees who do preach such ignorance. NARTH is just one organization that is filled with these idiots who are misguiding and misleading other gays (yes, I said other gays) and non-gays alike. To be noted though, you will not find any ACA or APA endorsements given to such organizations. Unfortunately, that apparently doesn't mean much to alot of people. But rather NARTH has seemingly made the APA into a boogeyman of sorts for stating time and time again that homosexuals are not ill, that they are perfectly normal people, and that efforts should be made so that homosexuals are treated the same as heterosexuals.

Nonsense. I bet you don't even have a model of mental health consistent with your cheap words.
I was thinking more of something that because people make statements like that, some people believe that religion is a mental illness.

The reality is that without Jesus a person is already mentally and emotionally ill.
Just want to check what you're saying here. Everyone in the world who is not a Christian is mentally ill? Is that what you're saying?

So, for example, I am mentally ill? That's your position?

Because it is a public institution, and they cannot discriminate on grounds of religion.

Because if they can't show that it causes a serious problem, then it is just discrimination against a religion.
Well, the article said she showed no lack of understanding of the course material, that her issues were not academic in nature, but a question of certain beliefs which she had espoused. Also, if the course material is, with out need, discriminatory against religion it is illegal.

Hmmm. What is the coursework included the position that cutting off baby girls genitals harms their emotional health?

What about the idea that counseling people is more effective than sacrificing chickens? That prayer is not an effective form of counselling for non-Christian clients? That homosexuality is not a form of mental illness? Are these religious discrimination?

When a university awards a degree, they're saying you've met some kind of minimum standards in your field. If you're unable to meet those standards, you're not entitled to a degree, and to award you a degree is bad for the professional reputation of the university and devalues the degrees of those who are actually entitled to them.

If we allow people to have religious exemptions from meeting the requirements of their degree program, where will that end? Biology degrees with a specialty in Creation Science?

Keeton deserves to lose her case and to be ordered to pay court costs and the legal fees of the university.

However, if the standards set by a university that wants to keep its accreditation, the university would have to meet certain requirements.

In this case, it looks like they violated their own rule.

Oh yeah, I definitely don't think she'd know those limits. Being on a high horse seems to make people think they can do anything.

Religion "can" become a mental illness or at least a major factor in its presentation.

There is no logic in saying religion is equivalent to mental illness.

Do we not have freedom of speech anymore?

Yes, we do. This doesn't run counter to that. I also have the freedom to call co-workers all sorts of names like the N-word. However, I also have to face the consequences. The freedom of speech doesn't say we can say whatever we want without repercussion. It says we can't be locked up for what we say.

This is going to an extreme I find.

Why do you find that?

I hold no exceptions for religious extremists, whether they are Christian or Muslim. Keaton is just as bad as the terrorists who did 9/11 with respect to her homophobic attitudes. And just as I'd expect any self-respecting university to expell Jihadist students, I'd expect them to do the same for any Christian extremist.

Not only that, if she is homophobic, she clearly displays attitudes which are unprofessional and unsuited for work in the real world.

Perhaps, if she's going into counseling, and part of valid counseling is that homosexuality is normal, and her religious views dictate that homosexuality is abnormal, that she's not really called into the counseling profession and needs to reconsider a career track that is consistent with her beliefs. I'd be willing to bet that we don't see a lot of Amish pilots, strippers, or computer engineers, because those things are inconsistent with their beliefs.

You can't yell Fire in a crowded theater.
You can't yell a racial slur in public without some kind of aftereffect.
You can't hate some of the very people that you would be working with.

Well-said.

"Amish Strippers" sounds like a bad porn movie in-the-making.
