Commandments by Christ.

except Sandy, Judaism in the first century was wide and diverse with different adherance to laws.

Galilean Jews tended to be more strict at adhering to traditional laws, then say the more Hellenistic sects.
So to which commandments was He referring when He said to keep "my" commandments?

Barnes' Notes on the Bible
If ye love me - Do not show your love by grief at my departure merely; or by profession, but by obedience.
Keep my commandments - This is the only proper evidence of love to Jesus, for mere profession is no proof of love; but that love for him which leads us to do all his will, to love each other, to deny ourselves, to take up our cross, and to follow him through evil report and through good report, is true attachment. The evidence which we have that a child loves its parents is when that child is willing, without hesitation, gainsaying, or complaining, to do all that the parent requires him to do. So the disciples of Christ are required to show that they are attached to him supremely by yielding to all his requirements, and by patiently doing his will in the face of ridicule and opposition, 1 John 5:2-3.

Clarke's Commentary on the Bible
If ye love me, keep my commandments - Do not be afflicted at the thought of my being separated from you: the most solid proof ye can give of your attachment to and affection for me is to keep my commandments. This I shall receive as a greater proof of your affection than your tears.

Gill's Exposition of the Entire Bible
If ye love me,.... Not that Christ doubted of the love of his disciples to him; but he argues from it to their observance of his precepts, seeing ye do love me; as all do who are born again, who have had any spiritual sight of him, of his glory, suitableness, and fulness; who believe in him, and have received from him; who have had his love shed abroad in their hearts, having enjoyed communion with him, and know the relation he stands in to them; these love him above all others, and all of him, and that belong to him, unfeignedly, and in the sincerity of their souls, as did the disciples; and since they professed to love, and did love him, as they ought to do, he exhorts them, saying,
keep my commandments: Christ is Lord over his people, as he is the Creator and Redeemer of them, and as he is an head and husband to them, and as such he has a right to issue out his commands, and enjoin a regard unto them; and these are peculiarly "his", as distinct from, though not in opposition to, or to the exclusion of, his Father's commands; such as the new commandment of loving one another, and the ordinances of baptism, and the Lord's supper, which are to be observed and kept as Christ has ordered them, constantly, in faith, and with a view to his glory.

Vincent's Word Studies
Keep (τηρήσατε)
The best tests read τηρήσετε, ye will keep. Lay up in your hearts and preserve by careful watching. See on reserved, 1 Peter 1:4.
My commandments (τὰς ἐντολὰς τὰς ἐμὰς)
Literally, the commandments which are mine. See on John 10:27.

Geneva Study Bible
{6} If ye love me, keep my commandments.
(6) He loves Christ rightly who obeys his commandment: and because obedience to Christ is accompanied with an infinite type and amount of miseries, although he is absent in body, yet he comforts his own with the present power of the Holy Spirit, whom the world despises, because it does not know him.

People's New Testament
14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. Keeping the commandments will be the result if we love him. The Revised Version gives the true idea: If ye love me, ye will keep my commandments. Obedience is the fruit of love. Wesley's Notes
14:15 If ye love me, keep my commandments - Immediately after faith he exhorts to love and good works.

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Bible Commentary
15-17. If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, &c.-This connection seems designed to teach that the proper temple for the indwelling Spirit of Jesus is a heart filled with that love to Him which lives actively for Him, and so this was the fitting preparation for the promised gift.
he shall give you another Comforter-a word used only by John; in his Gospel with reference to the Holy Spirit, in his First Epistle (1Jo 2:1), with reference to Christ Himself. Its proper sense is an "advocate," "patron," "helper." In this sense it is plainly meant of Christ (1Jo 2:1), and in this sense it comprehends all the comfort as well as aid of the Spirit's work. The Spirit is here promised as One who would supply Christ's own place in His absence. that he may abide with you for ever-never go away, as Jesus was going to do in the body.

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary 14:12-17 Whatever we ask in Christ's name, that shall be for our good, and suitable to our state, he shall give it to us. To ask in Christ's name, is to plead his merit and intercession, and to depend upon that plea. The gift of the Spirit is a fruit of Christ's mediation, bought by his merit, and received by his intercession. The word used here, signifies an advocate, counsellor, monitor, and comforter. He would abide with the disciples to the end of time; his gifts and graces would encourage their hearts. The expressions used here and elsewhere, plainly denote a person, and the office itself includes all the Divine perfections. The gift of the Holy Ghost is bestowed upon the disciples of Christ, and not on the world. This is the favour God bears to his chosen. As the source of holiness and happiness, the Holy Spirit will abide with every believer for ever.

Here are some commandments.

Matthew 5
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’[h] 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.

Non Violence is a commandment. Don't join the Army

Do not judge, or you too will be judged.-matthew 7:1

Don't Judge others.

Then the king will say to those at his right hand, "Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me."
-Matthew 25:34-36

Serve the poor give up all your wealth.

Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, "You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me."-Mark 10:21-22

Matthew 5

So when He was quoting the Mosaic Law He meant that those were "my" commandments?

Do not judge, or you too will be judged.
-matthew 7:1
Don't leave out the next part, "For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again." There have been long threads here on this but I believe this implies that there are correct judgements.

Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said, "You lack one thing; go, sell what you own, and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me."
-Mark 10:21-22
Do you think this was a specific command to that person or a commandment to all?

So you think that He meant what He said rather than the Mosaic Law?

I stated from the beginning Gjohns authors made this commandments claim, not Jesus.

Jesus did not author the book. It was written/finished almost 60 years after his death by a Johanine community with 3 different parts and 3 different authors or groups of authors. I do think some of the oral trdaition used though does go back early into the movement. But even then were only getting a glimpse of the Johanine communities version of what they thought was accurate.

Its my opinion Jesus while alive only made suggestions, never a commandment.

It wasnt fiction, just a collection of what I personally believe as some of his real sayings.

I think the authors just compiled and placed then all in one group.

I think he was a person who said the things that are attributed to him. Have you read the Jefferson Bible? It is the bible that Thomas Jefferson literally cut and pasted, trying to arrange Jesus's sayings and teachings from the four gospels in chronological order, omitting any references to divinity, miracles and the resurrection. It's possible we're talking about this sort of thing with the sermon on the mont. The reference to fiction was for the benefit of people who do believe everything about him is a fiction.

You seem to understand Jesus' simple commandment better than most main streamers.

Do you know that most US churches approve of killing their enemy and join the Army?

Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's; render unto God that which is God's. If you are part of a society and accept the benefits of that society, you are obligated to "render unto Caesar" if you are called up to serve in the military. If you have a problem with that, you can always form your own nation. You can also refuse military service and spend your time in prison. Then your conscience will be assuaged. If you have the choice to join the armed forces or not, don't join. Let others worry about themselves. Remember Matthew 7:1-5.

"If ye love me, keep my commandments." So said Jesus. Now for those of you who wish to say that it is only the words of Jesus that take pre-eminence, please elucidate for me exactly what are the commandments that Jesus commanded. In His words please.

So we have named a few commandments... now what?

Jesus was talking about tax. He does not contradict Himself. He says to love your enemy.

You miss the whole point of his teachings. Stop reading so narrowly.

Sooo...
What are we as Christians in America supposed to do, then? If, as you have said, this is the most Christian nation on earth (which I doubt), we cannot escape militarism. The armed forces are a branch of government. Government is of the people. Therefore, whether we're "in the army" or not, we're still complicit in the acts of the military. At least from your legalistic POV.

Congratulations. You've succeeded in entrapping every Christian American in a position of "not following Jesus," no matter what we do. Somehow, I don't think that's what Jesus had in mind when he is quoted as saying, "love your enemies."
