Common ground.

That is an unusual obsession and probably problematic. When you see everything and everyone through a religious lens, you miss so much about peoples character.

Eh, I focus on things through a religious lens, too, but I suspect its different from what you're meaning. I don't worry about what other people do, or focus on what my religion says they should do because I think that's irrelevant. There are thousands of Gods doing thousands of things. I don't become concerned about who lines up with what.

Mostly, I ponder internally on mythological stories, on Gods from around the world, and notice when things remind me of such. I try to focus on the underlying oneness of it all; how we're all connected.

I don't do this because of any religious obligation, I do it because it brings me joy, gratitude, and (here it goes) common ground with all.

So there will not be a common ground then

Why not find common ground outside of religious stuff? Share a great cake recipe, or enjoy some music with someone. A person's religious beliefs don't matter there. Clean up the neighborhood together. Nobody likes trash on the ground.

Do we insist on secular invocations before meetings?

Actually, that's happened here. My city was the first that was propositioned by the local atheist group to do a secular invocation, and it was accepted right away. However, from that experience, the leader of said group made an absolute publicity stunt out of it(calling news and newspaper to come cover him), and so when he started propositioning the small towns in the area, they simply shut down all invocations just to avoid dealing with the flashing lights and distractions.

I think if he had been more genuine and humble about it, it could have been a really cool thing.

It Aint Necessarily So

How can believers and atheists find common ground to be able to say. You know, I see you as a human being, no matter if you believe in a religion or not. I want to know you as a person, but if you believe or not, that is your private choice. I can love you for just being you.

Not fighting is common grounds and love enough, and by fighting, I do not mean mere disagreement.

When you say that you can love a stranger just for being whoever he or she is, what does that mean that's different from somebody like me saying that I can like someone, wish him well, and if he needs assistance, help him?

How would religious differences affect that? I'm a bridge enthusiast (the card game), and I often play with or against people with religious and political views that I don't share nor consider virtues, but they never come up in our interactions. There is no atheist-versus-theist aspect to the relationship, and if one arose, I wouldn't participate - not in meat space, where we can't just click on ignore or scroll past like we do here in anonymous cyberspace.

Personally i have some form of religious thoughts, idea, ponder, discussion, talk more than 70% of my day, every day.

You're looking for common ground, but that would be a barrier to us becoming friends if you and I were neighbors, for example. I would only have 30% of your life left in which to find that common ground. Your life is mostly religion. But I could still greet you when I saw you, and give you a hand if you needed it.

Post sexy pictures. I find that takes my mind off religion right away. :D

For the most part i see it in discussion or debate area.

Maybe it is unhealthy to discuss between believers and non believers because it seldom lead to any good.
I'm wondering why you think that, since it is something that everyone who wants peace would be interested in.

Simple. Leave out your God and messengers, and we leave out criticism of your beliefs. Every one is happy.
Yes, what is the common ground? Not religion, God and his messengers. But can a religion that is told to go out and tell others about this new revelation from God actually not talk about it?

We all need to come down off our high horses of racial,
You might not think so, but some people might get the feeling that a religion that says that it has replaced all the other religions, and that all the other religions in one way or another have corrupted their teachings, and that there is no doubt about it, there is one God and he has sent a new messenger that has the truth and teachings needed for today... They might be thought of as being on a "high" horse.

Can Baha'is put aside their need to spread the "word", to get along with and find the common ground with people they know will disagree with their religious beliefs?

I think the people here are terrific. But when I think about peace I think Myanmar, Ukraine, Syria, Iran and people who are suffering severe oppression. I wish we could help them now but I think until the conscience of the world has been stirred enough nothing much will be done apart from verbal condemnations.
Still, put together a great peace march to any of those places and I'm sure there will be several people that will join with the Baha'is to go there and march for peace.

I do not see religious people doing that but maybe you see something I don't see.
Religion in my country (UK) is.....
1. Stopping terminally ill patients in pain from asking their doctor to stop the suffering.
2. Resisting the legitimising of Humanist weddings (ie without the need for a second ceremony)
3. Christianity automatically has 20 seats in our second chamber - unelected, unrepresentative.
4. Religious schools are allowed to omit 'sensitive' topics from their curriculum.

Those come to mind, there are more

Most religious conflict is between people of different faiths.
Yes, how many religions are going to get along with any religion that believes it is right and the other one, is somehow, wrong? And even Baha'is are like that. They have the new, better, more accurate truth from God.

That is the root cause of problems. You cannot leave God. If you cannot leave talking about God and his messages, then we atheist cannot stop asking you for evidence of your God and his messengers.
And putting a person's religious beliefs aside is necessary if the goal is to get along.
