Is America a Police state?

Apex

Somewhere Around Nothing
The video shows a different story. The man seemed to be collecting his stuff as if he were preparing to come down the hill. He was far to separated from the cops to pose any real threat to them with knifes, given the rough terrain. The cops then throw a flash bang, wich seems to stun the guy. He drops all his gear, puts his hands up, and turns around to bend down as if to get on the ground (which is what the cops are yelling at him to do). At this point the cops murder him. And I say murder because there was absolutely no reason for them to shoot him, especially with live rounds. Its hard to cover up a cold blooded killing when you video tapped yourself doing it. Hopefully they will be brought up on homicide charges.

Oh, I completely agree with you. He was shot in the back and as he was on the ground begged and pleaded with them to not hurt him anymore. They clearly had the advantage. It looked like there was blood on a big rock in front of him. I'm wondering if he hit his head as he was being murdered by police. I'm wondering where it goes from here. They're talking about throwing money at training police....but I could care less about that right now as I want to see some justice served and not a slap on the wrist.......

Now..... where were we? Ah, yes....... Is America a Police State?
Nah! Just look at the 'cops per 100,000 folks' ratios which real police states can accrue!
Now America don't come in the statistics at all.... it's so far down the list it's out of sight.
You only field 233 'cops' per 100,000 residents, which is a very low number. America comes in at about 43rd.

The World's Biggest Police States - Business Insider

How many police that are employed doesn't make a country a police state. As shown in many of the videos and news articles posted here, a handful of police is all that is needed to terrorize a community.

It is level of corruption and rights violations routinely practiced by police agencies, sometimes as a matter of policy.
It is taking a SWAT team to serve simple warrants.
It's police and border patrol conducting suspicionless stops on motorists and illegally searching their vehicles and detaining people unlawfully as per their written policy.
It is the stop-and-frisk policies.
It is a police officer calmly pulling his pistol out and shooting in the back a handcuffed man and only getting a 2 year sentence.
It is policies that allow officers to confiscate money during a traffic stop without charging you for a crime, but simply because you had too much money.
It is having the largest prison population in the world, outperforming even the strictest countries.

This is what makes a police state, not how many police are employed by the state.

Nah!

In general answer to the above 2-3 posts, let's just look at the situation.

1. The majority of you appear tpo want easy access to guns for mostly anybody.
2. Your cops get shot for nothing, out of the blue, carrying out the most routine functions.
3. After a period of time on the job, they know they can die at any time, for no reason, shot by murderers and maniacs.

Now you can't con us Brits, because we see masses, literally masses of US police vids of US citizens doing the most crazy things. We often see film of Law Enforcers getting shot in the guts after stopping speeding motorists and asking for their licences etc. Oh yes we do!

I suspect that many Police State conspiracy nuts fancy themselves as cops, the only problem being that if they could hold the job down for a year they would be pulling guns on jay walkers, or anybody who moved towards pocket, bag, map pocket or boot. They would be useless! I would love to discover how many US citizens shoot folks in friendly fire situations, but that would take some digital detection skill which I don't have.

I particularly liked recent posts about cops getting judges to sign search warrants so that folks could be shot in bed. It could happen, but not to nail the local mail deliverer or store manager.

Yes........ you get bad doctors, naughty dentists, wicked bar owners and bad cops, but some of you make it look like every cop you've got is a fraudulent, thieving murderer........... in which case, what the hell are you doing in America? Why haven't you fled to Cambodia or somewhere?

Well?

You would be more likely to be imprisoned in the US than any of those countries. And why do we have to move? Why can't we just fix the problems?

...... One post was more interested in revenge than training. Not all are truly interested in mpvong forward.
First it would be necessary to understand the problems, which are not about policing, more about people. You have chosen to criticise cops who many who are traumatised, frightened, lack regular counselling and training reviews, etc.
at 233 lps per 100000 they may be understaffed
and you are in a gunsawash country.
i guess that a massive% of cops fell over the stress threshold a long time ago.

if you worked as a cop for a year you would not be the mindset, ever again, is my guess. I worked a process server, tracer and com detevtove in England for decades, trained thousands of ops, made over 30 training and intro films, but i would not have worked on usa. I don't know how such folks, esp cops, cope.

so you live, not just in a police state, but an airline state?
The airlines don't really control the TSA.

tsa would probably not allow me to fly because i suffer from labrynthitus.
Your ilk should just be imprisoned...preferably here....

sorry, i did not realise that tsa is transport security admin. I thought it wad a bloody airline.

sufferers of labrynthitus don't need prisons, we get our own uniquely cruel version every now and then.

Man holds three men hostage with a knife. Cops arrive, shoot two victims as they flee, killing one, then arrest the assailant and charge him with murdering the guy they just shot to death as he was trying to escape, write in report that the two men shot were "aggressing" them.

It's bad when a crazy guy stabbing your friends with a knife is less terrifying than the police.

Can the government seize your tax refund to pay a relative's debt? - CBS News
This portends great new power for the IRS. Beforehand, it was only for fraud
that the statute of limitations did not apply. It seems that now, the fed can
simply claim money is owed, going back farther than any taxpayer could
reasonably be expected to keep exculpating records.

But here's the big question: Will Oldbadger come to defend this practice too?
