Is it wrong to advocate homosexuality as a sin?

Vile Atheist

Loud and Obnoxious
I can relate!
My boyfriend is bisexual are we are in a -distant- relationship. It's really hard not to get paranoid when you know that most men cheat when they are only temped by half the population.

Not all of us men are absolute pricks, you know . I was in a two year long-distance relationship with my previous girlfriend and I remained faithful (*grumbles*...me and my damn morals...).

Edit: I was going to give you frubals for that post, but it appears I can't at the moment. If I forget - and I probably will - remind me :). I mean for Dawkins' sake, I forget my own birthday sometimes lol.

Haha, that's fine! I don't know why but I feel all happy now after telling you this. Maybe because you are the first person I've told. Anonymous online forums are great!!

I can relate. My ex was bisexual and it scared me a bit that way. However, I realized if she was trustworthy, she would not do it regardless of her sexual orientation. Did not mean I wouldn´t have my paranoid moments, though .

I feel the same way :)

Done here.
Sorry, what I wrote was probably innappropriate communicated. When I noted the stereotype it was with the intent of acknowledging that it is just a stereotype.

...and then parodying satan who I do not believe in.
I know. I question that "stereotype," though. Does anybody at all really believe we're all walking around in heels and pearls?

Nah, not really. Except for when I was in LA last year there were drag queens everywhere! But otherwise I don't think that anybody believes that all homosexual men cross dress...

Homosexuality is harmless, so how is it "the same" as vanity or gluttony which have clear harmful side-effects? Also, with this comparison here you have exposed your hypocrisy.

How can being vain have harmful side-effects? Other than the clear danger one would present to all mirrors!!! /sarcasm off

Gluttony is not just being fat btw either if that is the harmful side effect you are thinking of. But it is still a sin whether its because you are a glutton for food or a glutton for money for example.

The only hypocrisy here is you expect everyone to accept/respect you no matter how different you are, yet you refuse to accept/respect anyone who disagrees with you.

why should people of faith who are opposed to homosexuality as being a spiritually correct mode of existence and identity have to keep quiet or keep their beliefs behind closed doors?
People once thought that being female meant that one wasn't entitled to human rights -- and they based it on spiritual principle. Misogyny is not socially acceptable anymore. Nor is racism.

Religion needs to get with the times on this issue, just as it does with the "six days of creation" nonsense that some cling to. Homosexuality is not listed in the DSM as a deviant behavior. Therefore, it is normal and should not be seen as "sinful."
there is a big difference between stating what one believes, vs. cruelly or hatefully acting to hurt another person based on how they feel.
That's fine, as long as your stated feelings don't bleed over into acts of exclusion or judgment.
how fair is that in light of gay men and women no longer expecting their own freedom to live, date, identify, and even marry whomever they like to be shut behind closed doors because many find it offensive and wrong?
Many find bigotry offensive and wrong -- and a sin.

If someone's religion advocated thuggery or murder, I would not be tolerant of that religion. Instead, I would tell them to reform their religion. If someone's religion advocates treating homosexuals as second class citizens, I will not tolerate that religion. Instead I will tell them to reform their religion. You can call my attitude hypocrisy if you want. I call it a matter of basic decency and elementary morality.

Nothing wrong with advocating homosexuality as a sin. Because it is. Where people mess up is stating that you are automatically doomed or that you are a lesser class of person because of homosexuality which simply is not true. Homosexuality is sinful just the same as vanity or gluttony, which most Americans are guilty of one way or the other. The day people learn to accept the fact that it is sin and not a unforgivable sin will be a good day for all.
Is it wrong to advocate as sin something that is not sinful? I'd really like to know just what the fundigelicals think is sinful about honosexuality -- aside from "the Bible condemns it." What is wrong with it? Please, please, someone lay this out for me. We can state why other sins are sins. Why is homosexuality sinful? In what unique way does homosexuality turn us from God?

I think the principle is that it does not lead to reproduction of life.
The exaggeration and condemnation comes from pure, irrational discrimination.

Well, strictly Biblically, barrenness was seen by the ancients as a state of dissociation from God. But our sense of what makes one righteous has changed. If it had not changed, then the point could be made. But as it stands now... I don't think so.

It is not the religion that teaches people to treat homosexuals differently. It is peoples own fears and ignorance that causes it. Why is it that the 2 of the biggest racist groups in America (skin heads and KKK) not only fear/hate other races but also commit hate crimes against homosexuals? Because of their own fear/hatred of them, which has nothing to do with religion. That is what needs to be addressed not the religion itself. If you want to solve a problem you might want to correctly identify what the problem is. By attacking religion instead of ignorance your attempts to "fix" this problem is wasted and futile.

I wish you were right that some religions or religious expressions are not the problem. But I fear you are not right. It seems pretty evident that some religious institutions in America have intentionally or unintentionally promoted disrespect for, discrimination against, and general intolerance of homosexuals based on their leaders interpretation of their religion.

You know, if it would damage the human race to have a few gay people around I doubt the Earth would be as overpopulated as it is.

Not saying that against you in any way, but against that argument :).

The two most common ones I have heard that does not have to do with God or religion:
It is not normal
What is the point of individuality if everyone tries to be like everyone else? Wouldn´t that just make the world a very, very boring and dull place?
It is not natural
Why does it matter? We have cloths, computers, cars... none of those are natural, but we do not consider them sins. Besides, homosexuality is not something weird, it is very common in nature. How is it not natural? I am honestly confused about that one, lol.

Yes but that is the people twisting their philosophy into exaggerated proportions right? I don't think traditional religious teachings (as far as I know) incite this mentality. It is far mroe extreme because of people's manipulations.

Trust me, I agree with you. I see nothing wrong with homosexuality and I come from a strict religious background!

Sunstone: Admittedly.....you have somewhat of a point. But lets take Christianity for instance...If 100% of Christians promoted disrespect and discrimination for homosexuals there would be need of reform for Christianity. But that is not the case. What you are experiencing is the fear/hate of some of the people within the Christian community. By reforming Christianity it would not make that fear go away. It would still be there until you tackle the problem itself. I realize I am in a minority by supporting gay rights as a Christian, but more and more Christians are becoming pro-gay rights everyday, and soon (couple of years I would guess) we will no longer be the minority.
