Obama's Speech to School Kids

What is so political about saying "Stay in school, and strive for good grades"? It's called being a good leader, or at least attempting to be responsible and encourage the future generation to do good in school.

Perhaps the republicans fear that some cost will come with this, if too many stay in school, or that if you educate the poor they will want to take over.

Both very 18th century perspectives.

Considering that you take a shot at the U.S. every chance you get, I believe that you're the one with a hangup.

Not at all... I do not tar every American with the same brush... the more progressive ones are as enlightened as most Europeans.

However we do have experience in having to deal with extreme right wing views, and their tactics. we also had to fight our way out of 18th. century thought processes to gain our present social perspective.

Have to be blunt here, but if you really have an objection to the highest official in your country trying to inspire the youth to work hard and do well in school then you are a ******* moron.

Seems like after reading up a bit on this the(main) objection was to a lesson plan that was distributed to all the schools to go along with the speech.

The wording was for all the students to write a letter to themselves describing how they could help the president.

So the White House has reworded the lesson to ask for the students to write a letter to themsevles desribing their short and long term goals regarding their education.

The problem I have is some representaives are completley fabricating and stating as fact without even reviewing it is that the speech itself will contain Obamas policy goals and agenda on a broad range of issues that have nothing to do with education or staying in school. And I think too many people just believed that when as I said its completely fabricated and became defensive.

Yeah, but that's what it does. And maybe a good thing. Without incitement apathy would fester instead.

Debate means that both parties are willing to discuss the issue calmly, and consider all opinions and viewpoints. This is not a debate, it is incited hysteria.

Well lets just call it a "hysterical" debate then.

Greeting's ,

Thief has spoken well on this matter regarding "Public School's are no place for excessive politics".............. It appears that the current intensive level of "Intrusive Politics" influencing every facet of public school instruction has seriously minimized the vastly important role of classroom teachers and their ability to provide our students with a quality education............

One case in point is the extremely brief and often times distorted versions of American History
currently being taught by some school divisions to 4th & 5th grade students.....

Our President has a multitude of crucical and complex national and global problems that demand his unrelenting attention......................... It would serve the public schools of this nation far better if the Chief Executive would focus on these exclusively at this time and postpone any national broadcasts to our student populations across the nation............... Thanks M/S 1

Debate:
1. An argument, or discussion, usually in an ordered or formal setting, often with more than two people, generally ending with a vote or other decision.
2. An informal and spirited but generally civil discussion of opposing views.
3. (uncountable) Discussion of opposing views. There has been considerable debate concerning exactly how to format these articles.
4. (Frequently in French form débat) a type of literary composition, taking the form of a discussion or disputation, commonly found in the vernacular medieval poetry of many European countries, as well as in medieval Latin.

Do you view any of these definitions fitting the opinions of the current subject?

Look I only called it a debate because thats what the link said. The video might not even be the right one..It was two people on both sides of the issue and a "nuetral" mediating.

I dont want to get in a debate over the definition of debate.

Having said that I think this whole blow up is born out of paranoid extremist.

I would like to know how many of these people that are so terrified over a 20 minute speech to these kids who MOST of them could porbably give a rats behind anyway and will probably be asleep during the break from regular school even know what their childs regular school curriculum consist of on a day to day basis.

Also if Obama is talented enough to "indoctrinate" all the nations children to his entire view of every change needed in every area of the nations policies in 20 minutes plus a "write a letter to yourself" then Obama deserves to win them over.

Okay, I confess. I've been a bit extreme on this topic.
But I'm not relenting altogether.

The only relief I can accept is Dallas may be correct...hopefully so...that the children won't care.

Political agendas belong on capitol hill...not the classroom.
