In the People's Republic here on the east coast you must pay the government its kick up for each and every bag.

Quite a racket.
It's not a racket and only adds up if you're irresponsible. That fee doesn't add up at all if you reuse the bags like your supposed to. Do that and you can go months amd years without buying one.
And, of course, your aren't entitled to freebies at the store nor are you entitled to demand the store give you things for free.

I don't give the People's Republic my money anyways at least until they find and figure a way to make me forcefully hand it over by gunpoint.

In the meantime, It goes right back into the shopping cart loose , and I put it into a bin in my vehicle and go home.

Then bring your own bag.
You still have a choice.
No they don't give people choices.

It's choice taken away that used to be legally there. I don't fall for that deception that people still have their original choices because they simply don't.

The same reason why they don't give abortion choices because they make the nanny laws that give you no choice, whether it's big or insignificant as some people may think, it's still a significant loss of freedom and quality of life no matter how you look at it because it's those legal mechanisms that create the real danger and have created all this grief for people as well as increasing restrictions and furthers individual oppression by the big state.

This should be a major bipartisan contention that needs to be stopped and eliminated.

It is in every way of a racket and yet another money grab by big government.

You just provided a scenario where you were given a choice to purchase a bag for 5 cents or to bring your own bag or to carry your groceries in your arms. Those are choices. You don't have a "right" to receive a free bag from a store, as far as I know.

The choice remains. You can still get a plastic bag.

Why do you think you're entitled to a free one?
The same reason why they don't give abortion choices because they make the nanny laws that give you no choice,
Yes, the choice is taken away. Eliminated completely. You can't make a choice to abort in some states. So ... no choice. Zero choice. You have to remain pregnant.

In the plastic bag scenario, you still have a choice. You just don't personally like the fact that you now have to pay 5 cents for a bag. But you can still choose a plastic bag if you want. You can still bring your own bag, if you want. And you can still carry your grocery in your arms, if you want. Or you can choose not to go to the grocery store, and just have them delivered instead.

The only thing you can't do is have a free plastic bag. Which isn't a right, as far as I know.

Except that you can still get a plastic bag if you so choose. You just have to pay 5 cents.

Quite a racket.
Quite a good example of legislation to promote the general welfare as it says in the constitution and save money by reducing litter and landfill costs.
Oh and it is good for health and the environment too like when open sewers were outlawed. :)

Every plastic bag I get from Walmart or any other store, I put in a plastic bag. When it gets full I then take them to a clothes/food pantry and drop them off.
They reuse them for people coming there to pick up some food or other items.
