Books that encourage kindness

Several - for example -

Use these questions to facilitate thoughtful discussions about kindness in the classroom:

How did the main character show kindness?

Can you think of an alternative ending to the story where kindness prevails?

How would the story change if the main character was unkind?

Can you identify moments where a small act of kindness made a big difference?

How would you feel if you were the character who was treated unkindly?

Can you suggest ways the unkind characters could have acted differently?

What could be the long-term effects of the main character's kindness?

How might the story influence your actions in your real life?

Do you think the characters learned anything about kindness?

How does the story help you understand the importance of kindness?

Enjoy!

Ways to Help When Someone You Love Is Depressed

If you are in a relationship with someone who has depression, you are likely struggling with a mix of emotions and lots of questions. For instance, you might wonder:
  • What does depression feel like for my partner?
  • What can I do to help support them?
  • How can I take care of myself?
  • Will their symptoms impact our relationship and, if so, how can we navigate any issues together?
All of these questions are normal and it's understandable that you'd want to support your loved one to the best of your ability.

While your questions are valid, it's also important to understand that every person's experience with depression is unique so here are a few things you can do to help your loved one and yourself.

If you know someone who is experiencing depression, it can be difficult to know how to best show them support. Focus on letting them know you’re there for them, that they’re not weak, they’re not alone, and that there is hope.

It’s a fallacy to believe that when you’re kind to others that it shows weakness. On the contrary, when you go out of your way to be nice to someone, it takes a great deal of courage. To be kind means that you must step from beyond your comfort zone and show your vulnerability.

Opinion: Kindness isn’t childish, it’s necessary

World Kindness Day was just this Monday, a day to raise awareness about the importance of kindness and make it the norm. The word “kindness” can sometimes feel juvenile and childish — like one of those traits we heard about in first grade that our classmates would roll their eyes at. It seems like as we get older, the idea of being kind to the people around you and yourself is talked about less and less.

But life gets harder and more stressful as we get older and enter university. To me, kindness is even more necessary now than it’s ever been — it can make an even bigger impact.

For so many people, university is the most stressful time of their lives. On top of academics and the pressure to succeed, university is the place where social challenges and personal growth coincide for the better or for worse.

In such an environment, the significance of kindness and compassion cannot be overstated. Sometimes it can be as simple as helping a friend study or just being there for them.

Mental health is a serious issue among students that is always talked about — shocker, I know....

More fundamental than religion is our basic human spirituality. We have a basic human disposition towards love, kindness and affection, irrespective of whether we have a religious framework or not. When we nurture this most basic human resource - when we set about cultivating those basic inner values which we all appreciate in others, then we start to live spiritually.

Kindness quotes and famous remarks about empathy, compassion, forgiveness, and peace help engage children in meaningful conversations about themselves. Through these discussions, we teach kids about the true essence of the human spirit.

Empathy is the ability to recognize, feel, and respond to the needs and suffering of others. It facilitates the expression of caring, compassion, and kindness. Empathy helps youth see the outward impact of their actions in developing a just and sustainable world for everyone.

Kindness quotes can help children understand empathy in new ways – to discover how generosity, patience, forgiveness, tolerance, civic-mindedness, caring, and compassion are vital to peace and human understanding. Wise people throughout history have talked about the importance of empathy, from the Classical Greek philosopher Plato to modern TV personalities like Ellen DeGeneres. Research shows that empathy is one of eight core abilities that drive successful kids.

This Quotations Archive contains words from famous and some not so famous people who have expressed a sense of love, compassion, and respect for all of God's creation: for people, for animals, and for the environment. They speak of our teaching methods and philosophy. They speak of a lifestyle of non-violence. They seek to eliminate cruelty and suffering. They seek to wake us up. They seek to give us hope.

Family kindness practice -

Kindness has been in the news a lot lately.

Who doesn't love the "be kind" message? It feels good to do good. Intuitively, we know kindness makes our communities stronger. Discovering that it also better prepares our children for a meaningful life, reduces stress, and heightens emotional bonding just makes it better.

But we need to go beyond sharing kindness in our news feeds or packing our birthdays with 30-something acts of kindness.

We need to make kindness an unavoidable part of family life. As indispensable as brushing teeth.

In short, we need to practice.

Support from friends, family and health professionals, plays a significant role in the recovery process of someone experiencing a mental health issue. Educating yourself about mental health conditions is the foundation to providing the best support possible.

Our information is aimed at helping friends, family and carers support their loved ones and take care of themselves too.

It can be frightening and distressing when someone you care about wants to end their life.

We can help you recognise common suicidal warning signs, start a conversation with someone you’re worried about and make a plan to keep them safe.

People who have thought about suicide say the most important thing family, friends and colleagues can do is listen, show they care, and offer support.

Lord God, You came to give honour to the least, those forgotten, overlooked and misjudged. You came to give first place to the last, those left behind, misunderstood and undervalued. You came to give a warm welcome to the lost, those who are orphaned, abandoned and destitute. Help us to be your ears to listen to their cries. Help us to be your voice speaking out love and acceptance. Help us to be your feet walking beside those in need. Help us to be your hands to clothe, feed and shelter them. You came for the least, the lost and last of this world. Lord, hear our prayer. Amen.

"What can we actually do to be helpful to the world? Make a gift of your life and lift all mankind by being kind, considerate, forgiving and compassionate at all times, in all places and in all conditions with everyone as well as yourself. That's the greatest gift anyone can give."
