The Kindness Box

Jean Vanier's life demonstrates tenderness. A philosopher, a Catholic social innovator, and the founder of The L'Arche movement, which is centered around people with mental disabilities, he has devoted his life to the practical application of Christianity's most paradoxical teachings: that there's power in humility, strength in weakness, and light in the darkness of human existence. The 147 L'Arche communities are in 35 countries and have become places of pilgrimage and transformation for those involved and the world around them. They create a culture of welcoming, where tenderness and touch are important, where the disabled teach what it means to be human. In this interview, Vanier describes his work with the disabled and predicts that the future of the world will be one in which the little lights of love will spread and be places where people love each other.

Every morning, the students at Franklin Elementary in Mankato, Minnesota, take the Pledge of Allegiance. But five fifth-grade boys embody "liberty and justice for all." When the boys noticed their classmate with a learning disability getting teased, they banded together and made him a part of their gang. Watch this short film in which the boys themselves tell you why they did what they did.

Today I bent the truth to be kind,
and I have no regret, for I am far
surer of what is kind than I am
of what is truth.

The practice of mindfulness unveils and reveals your essential Good Heart, because it dissolves and removes the unkindness or the harm in you. Only when you have removed the harm in yourself do you become truly useful to others. Through the practice, by slowly removing the unkindness and harm from yourself, you allow your true Good Heart, the fundamental goodness and kindness that are your real nature, to shine out and become the warm climate in which your true being flowers.

This is why I call meditation the true practice of peace, the true practice of nonaggression and nonviolence, and the real and greatest disarmament.

The power of a simple compliment is one of the most under-estimated acts of kindness that anyone can do. A thoughtful compliment can turn someones rough day at work into a bright one, can make a child smile after being bullied or even give someone the boost of self-confidence they needed to conquer their struggles. They are easy and free. And get this, studies show that receiving a compliment has the same positive effects as receiving cash.

Some of them are just very small, simple kind deeds. But even the smallest, most simple act of kindness can make a difference in someone's life in a very big way. Perhaps by reading about a kindness idea that someone else has done you will be inspired to do the same or come up with an entirely new idea of your own. We hope you will be truly motivated by these stories and that they will touch your heart.

Small acts of kindness are sometimes powerful enough to make major headlines. In fact, you've probably read about or watched a few of these stories unfold in the past month. Here's how it usually plays out: One person will do a good deed—such as placing a cup of coffee on reserve for a homeless person, or paying off a stranger's layaway balance at Kmart—then a trend will start, with more and more people getting in on the act. The result is a feel-good story for all. The benefactors are happy to have done a good deed and the recipients are pleased to have been given a small but meaningful helping hand.
