What is the definition of a "Woman"?

I can't believe in a few hours there is an 8 page thread debate at RF over what a woman is, with much more of the debate ahead of us.

I think the factors present that lead to the label on a birth certificate, makes it fairly obvious to every person born in America, if they are a woman or not.

It doesn't strike me as being a complicated thing to figure out, but quite simple to identify a male or female at birth, and once that female is an adult, that is a woman.

Also, I think the word "womb", is where the "wom" in the word "woman" comes from, or what it stands for, in the etymology, so chances are, if you have a womb, you are a "wom"an. ;)

“Woman" comes from the Old English word, wīfman, meaning wife.

“Womb” comes from the Old English word wamb, which refers to the “belly, bowels, uterus, or heart" and various similar Germanic words meaning “belly” or “paunch.” It is more closely related to the Old English word for “child,” umbor.

The words look similar in modern English, but originally they were not so.

I think I mentioned natural testosterones levels, XX rather than XY chromosomes, and Prostate instead of a Uterus. As far as post #55, the fact that through modern technology we have the ability to make a biological man look like a biological woman, and visa versa has nothing to do with what I said.
Pffft! So people can’t have what technology can give them? Real men and women have gaps where their teeth rot and fall out?
Real men and women let themselves die from infections, so as to make future generations hardier?
And on…and on….and on….?

Or do we improve our lives from misery that was the past?

Those who remember the ‘Good ol’ days’, are either too young to have been there, or too old to remember it.

Out of idle curiosity, the man in this picture doesn't have the "correct functional stuff hanging down there." Because he didn't have them when he was born. His name is Luke Hudson, and he's a trans-man.

Without a sword and testicles this person will never fully understand what it is like to be a man. Mimicing stereotypes displayed by the male sex may give many insights but it does not grant the full experience. This is a harsh reality for some to accept, and perhaps someday technology will change things, but it is what it is.

Regardless, if I get along well with a specific trans person I can be convinced to use their pronouns. It doesn’t change my perspective at all, but it can be a gesture of mutual respect and allow us to coexist peacefully and focus instead on other things.

Me personally, I would feel genuine no matter what body my consciousness inhabited. Male, female, machine, hologram, whatever. What is truly “me” is neither male nor female, but something more akin to a save file. Were that save file uploaded into another vessel, regardless of the sex I would make it work and feel 100% genuine.

According to their “biology”? Please see post #55 on page 3 of this thread.
Do you mean chromosomes? Or their reproductive organs? Or….what?

Again, please see post #55. Should the person in the 2nd photo have to change in the men’s locker room? Should the guy in the 1st photo compete against young women athletes? o_O
Do you know how many fake photos are out there? My only comment is that if these are true photos the doctoers who took part should not be allowed to practice medicine. Some people will do anything for money.

That's the difference. One is natural and the other is artificial.
Sorry I did not think of this. Natural versus artificial. Body parts determine natural and warped minds define artificial. The person in the photo is certainly allowed to say "he" feels like a man or identifies as a man. But nature did not give "him" the right parts to be a man. He is a woman with small breasts and a beard who feels like a man or wants to be a man.She is naturally a woman and artificially a man.

Ever heard of de la Chapelle syndrome

If you consider XX to be female and XY to be male(which ain't a good gauge) then this person would be female.

But they would have male genitals
Such a person is biologically considered intersex (considered a deformity). All mammals are either biological males, females, or intersex.

I never said people shouldn’t have what technology can give us, I just said that doesn’t change your biology. If I got skin graphs, and plastic surgery to make myself look like an ape, does this mean I am no longer human?

150+ years ago, Abraham Lincoln was being interviewed by a reporter from New York. After the interview, Lincoln asked the reporter the following question
How many legs does a dog have if you count it’s tail as a leg?
The reporter responded 5. Lincoln said he was wrong; that the dog still has 4 legs; that just because you call a tail a leg, doesn’t make it a leg.
That was true nearly 2 centuries ago, and is still true today.

True. But today we could (theoretically) graft long bones into the tail, and chemically induce a paw to grow at it’s end; and it would become a leg. A real and functional leg. Then that dog would have 5 legs.

But if the dog just went around calling his tail a leg because that is what he thinks it is, the dog would be wrong.

If they find a way to chemically induce a biological female so her chromosomes change from XX to XY, her uterus turns into a prostate, her ovaries turn into testicles, and her testosterone and estrogen levels become on par with that of a male, according to my definition of male/female, she would have become a male. However; but if all she is doing is calling herself a man because she feels like a man; even though she can’t define what a man is…… that sounds absurd to me. (pardon my bluntness)
