What was last movie you watched?

I think the last movie I watched was a movie called The Little Mermaid. It was over 20 years ago, when I was about 7 or 8, so I doubt many people here would remember it. We were at some distant relative's house and they put this movie on. I recall being so scared of the protagonist who was half human half octopus, that I had to leave the room. It was horrible.

Ariel scared the movie-going crap out of you?

12 Years a Slave

Historically accurate torture porn. But that's OK, because I like historical movies, and torture movies. It's like if Hostel was a true story and set in mid-19th century Louisiana. Two thumbs up.

Desolation of Smaug.

I'm pretty tired of LOTR/Hobbit movies, and just watching them out of an odd sense of obligation at this point. They're very long, villains are completely one dimensional, and every once in a while if you look closely, you might see a woman somewhere in the films on occasion.

And I don't like Peter Jackson's over-the-top action scenes, especially in all of his post-LOTR movies like King Kong and these Hobbit films. Basically there's like rocks falling everywhere, people are falling insane distances, complex highly choreographed immense set pieces are dancing around perfectly as characters intended them to, and it goes on and on for like 10 minutes straight with just a constant barrage of countless lucky near-misses, and everyone gets through without so much as a broken bone. It goes past the point of action into bad humor, imo.

Gandalf is always cool, and Smaug was okay. Legolas is always pretty decent, and the movie-only Tauriel was pretty neat and probably a good idea to add.

You are more patient than me. To this day I haven't been able to sit through a single LOTR movie despite trying to multiple times. the best I can stomach is bits and pieces. They're just so boring, I can't do it. Would have been much more watchable as one three hour movie instead of three three hour movies.

I was only 8 or 9 years old! Why would I not be scared of picture of someone who's half human half octopus and has a scary voice? She was turning all the good guys into pathetic-scary worms or something, I can't remember anymore. It was really scary. Why would they want to put scary characters in a kids video??? It just doesn't make any sense. It should be pg13.

Oh you mean the Sea Witch! I can understand how that character might frighten a sensitive 8-year-old, although not so much how it would put you off movies altogether.

Which Little Mermaid did you see!?

In the original 1800's Hans Christian Andersen tale, it is much darker, and ends with the Little Mermaid's suicide. She's benevolent, though. There have been some animated adaptations of that original work.

In the most popular Disney version, Ariel (the protagonist) is a kind mermaid that just wants legs so she can meet the man she loves and join the humans. She's nice and kind and happy. And almost everyone knows of that movie, because it was one of Disney's popular animated movies.

The antagonist is Ursala, the half-octopus evil lady:

If the sea-witch is the name of the blue lady down there, then that's the one.

It didn't put me off movies altogether. My denomination just usually avoids movies and TV altogether.

Haven't you watched Ushpizin? Good Israeli movie about Sukkot.

She's meant to be scary because she's the villain, not the protagonist.

I think it's a pretty decent movie. Disney movies can at times be quite serious, touching on themes of oppression, violence, etc.

What a Way to Go: Life at the End of Empire.

A documentary about our current global crisis. And how just maybe we should accept that there are might not be any solutions and prepare for extinction.

Just saw a Winter's Soldier. Not bad for a Marvel comic book movie but there starting to get repetitive. Nothing unexpected(except the old reel to reel computer)

Was it preachy at all? I want to see it but I want to watch a movie not sit through a two hour sermon.

Nope. Not at all. It's similar to way the movies about Greek mythology are. The Biblical story is used as a backdrop for a universal message dealing with virtue and respect for all lifeforms.
