Why do some Atheists say Christianity is harmful?

ratiocinator

Lightly seared on the reality grill.
Oh, and i never had a problem with the antics of God in the Old Testament, like some people have. No quite the opposite. God there shows what he wants from Humanity, and what his Rules are, and He shows what happens to those who disobey Him.
Right, so genocide and slavery are just fine. Then you get all worked up about what consenting adults do for fun. And you ask us why atheists think your kind of Christianity is harmful? Are you even for real?

Yep. In my personal opinion, such opinions as this are more harmful to society than anything.
I find it odd as someone has gone through similar things, being attracted to other men.

It isn't surprising to me because some of the most vocal anti-gay Christians I've ever met are either "ex-homosexuals" purposely denying who they are or closet homosexuals, and it's later revealed (either intentionally or unintentionally) that they are gay, and there is intense self-hatred attached to it.

And how is sexual purity exactly a bad thing? I dont see how Christianity can be harmful at all. So why do they claim it?
It traumatized me as a child, taught me to hate myself, and left me a wreck.
It also says slavery and sex slavery is ok. It has very many policies that harm no one, and puts those who are different and enjoying life, or apostates, in a position of lesser than, going s far to say upfront atheists are fools.
And, by the way, lots of us nonatheists have a long list of complaints amd grievances against Christianity. God says no pork but women are to automatically be submissive to men?
I'd rather not side with someone who hates us so amd is so eager and willing to eternally punish us over his "my way or the highway" attitude.
That's not the things of a god but of tyranical and repressive men who hate women and lust for control amd power.

How can one present an argument for a religious belief? It is all just a matter of opinion.
It's not so much about the OP post, but small comments like these without any argument for why that is true or how it compared to his own beliefs etc.

"....Being an atheist is miserable because you have no meaning in life."

This is like me saying that "Baha'u'llah is a liar." and then moving on. That is not an argument it's just an unjustified statement. Fair enough if that is his opinion, but it is very difficult to take such things seriously, whether it's his or my example.

Or blaming others for the trauma they experienced in their life (post #218).

"Dont blame God or other christians, blame only yourself. Like i do. Remember its your fault, always."

I'm just the opposite, i never knew what true happiness was until I enjoyed proper, intense sex. It changed my life.
To each his or her own. I used to think that way too, but I changed.
And what happens to that happiness when one can no longer have sex? That time comes for everyone.

I don't ever want to be in a position where I depend upon anything that is not eternal.
Jesus was right about that.

John 12:24-26 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour.

I know that our circumstances aren't exactly the same, but I feel for you, Shadow Wolf, because I understand what you've been through. I know the pain.

Yeah, that is not well received either.

But he seems a little unstable, so won't argue with him. If believing in God makes him get through the days, by all means, keep believing, but there is no reason to cast judgment on others without at least presenting a valid argument. Citing/referring religious texts as if they are absolute truth, doesn't work well for most people.

I suppose you can share an example, then, of a member here telling the OP that they're not entitled to their own opinion?

If not, then you claim that it's true is unfounded.
It is not a claim, it is only an opinion.

I said: Most people on this thread don't seem to think it is okay for you to have your own opinions.
In my opinion, this is true.
