Having seen it in person, I am sure that it is in fact an inanimated object with no will of its own.
Trust me, she is right. The pigeons love statues, in Rio as everywhere else. They do not seem to mind or care whether there is any religious significance to them.

You seem not to get the point. A lot of atheists do not care about statues in nations they do not live in.

I live in a conservative Christian town. There are people with serious money here. We have some beautiful churches and public artworks that I truly cherish. There is tons of religious music I love to listen to.
I am not religious in any theological way, much less an idolater. So I appreciate things regardless of what an ancient warlord thought or did.

It's a statue. It has no magical properties to scare non-believers. We're not like vampires in movies who react to garlic or crosses if we're non-religious. If a person finds it culturally significant or beautiful why not? It's not like non-Abrahamics are supposed to hate everything about Abrahamic religions or their aesthetics. If you're idea says that, then you are just wrong.
