I think you're overestimating the ability folks to be discerning critics of the fine arts by quite some margin. There's a huge difference between jane schmane's ability to assess the arts and someone who has at least a bachelor's level understanding of art critique.
Eh. I think people can recognize garbage when they see it

One can still tell if it's good or bad even if it's a genre they don't care for.
That's simply not true. Yes, there's some art and artists that have public fame, but that doesn't mean we as individuals have to agree with that consensus.

An example I can personally give is I took a class on art appreciation during my undergrad years, the professor loved Picasso's works, but I can't stand it.

. One doesn't have to like Picasso to see his work is good

Wokeness added to the decline of The Simpsons.
- Eliminating Apu & family.
- Black actor replacing white voice of Dr Hibbard.
(Noticeably different.)

It's even affected Family Guy (Cleveland).

A comment on the internet.....

When is he going to apologize to white sea captains and Italian chefs and slack-jawed rednecks and comic shop owners and fat police officers and depressed bar owners? These woke morons like Hank Azaria are so tiresome.

Calling people who disagree with one's views "woke morons" isn't exactly a blazingly intellectual way to refute their position.

As an artist you either have it or you don't. Even if you don't have it and you're enjoying doing what you're doing, then by all means continue on. This is really obvious in the visual arts.

So I could show you 20 works of art and you can easily split them into good and bad pieces. You should write a book.

BTW, this discussion sorta reminds me about my answer to the question "Which is the best wine?". My response is "It's the wine you like the best".

As for myself, I'll go with a Bordeaux. :)
