The halal rort on Australians: paying an Islamic religious food tax without knowing

So if there was a jar of Vegemite with a halal logo, and a jar of Vegemite without a halal logo (both the exact same Vegemite product, though), you would buy the one without the halal logo? In this example, Vegemite is already intrinsically halal. For a non-halal alternative to be available...

Slowly but Surely Leaning Toward Paganism

I love it when some Pagans say they worship or honour the earth and then proceed to litter their cigarette butts. *sigh*

The halal rort on Australians: paying an Islamic religious food tax without knowing

I second that! :D I suppose, since it's made with brewer's yeast, some Muslims might be concerned that it contains alcohol. The halal endorsement would dispel that concern.

The halal rort on Australians: paying an Islamic religious food tax without knowing

Chocolate is a bit more complicated because some chocolate can contain gelatin that is derived from pork. In this way, the halal logo is like a vegetarian or vegan logo. It's a quick way of knowing if it's OK for you to eat, or has something you don't want to eat hidden in the numbers or the...

The halal rort on Australians: paying an Islamic religious food tax without knowing

Vegemite is only halal because it doesn't contain anything that is not halal. You could put a halal logo on a bottle of water.

    If God wants circumcision...

I hate to isolate quotes from Sikh scripture, but I don't want to derail the thread by posting the entire shabad (available here instead, from page 477 of Sri Guru Granth Sahib). Here's the Sikhi attitude towards circumcision, the words of Kabir Ji: ਸਕਤਿ ਸਨੇਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਸੁੰਨਤਿ ਕਰੀਐ ਮੈ ਨ ਬਦਉਗਾ ਭਾਈ ॥...

I've been coming across a lot of your posts lately. I hope one day I can conduct myself in the face of hostility with as much grace as you can. :)

Gurus, prophets, religious leaders who led exemplary lives?

Of course I jest with the above quotes. Not only is it disrespectful to the Gurbani to pick bits of it out to 'prove points', there is far more bani in SGGSJ that makes it abundantly clear that caste is another futile construct. However that does not give anyone an excuse to be disrespectful...

Panna 558? Āpe ḏas aṯẖ varan upā▫i▫an āp barahm āp rāj la▫i▫ā. He Himself created the people of the eighteen castes; God Himself acquired His domain.

Gurus, prophets, religious leaders who led exemplary lives?

Of course I know that caste is cast out of Sikhi. But if we're going to cherry pick, then lets. :) I find it ironic that when it comes to talking about negative things, the only scripture to exist in Sikhi is Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Yet there are plenty more sources of information and...

Gurus, prophets, religious leaders who led exemplary lives?

The pic'n'mix approach MUST be used. But why do it at all? Why carry around all that baggage to be filtered through? And who says what to keep and what to ignore? It's a dangerous game to play.

Ah, the quintessential problem with religion! Pic'n'mix.

    Science and Sikhi

Science is science. Spirituality is spirituality. Why do they need to cross over? Do you feel you can prove something by relating Gurbani's spiritual message to science? Regarding the post about plants and life, and reading the whole shabad, I'm interested in your views on a line from later...

Urgent Help! List of words for email filtering

Hello IT savvy people I've been asked by my manager to set up email filtering at our organisation, and for that I need a list of 'hot words' \ 'key words' \ 'blacklisted words' for the system to pick up in emails. If anyone in an IT field has a list I could use, it would really help! Or else...

    Views on Islam?

Dozens of tuks? I must have missed them. :( I know very well that (initiated) Sikhs don't eat halal slaughtered meat. I have no qualms about that. :) The reason Sikhs don't eat halal slaughtered meat is because of an instruction from Guru Gobind Singh during times of war with invading...
