Are religion and philosophy mutually exclusive?

No, you derailed your goal, and have since convinced yourself that philosophy is evil. All of us with degrees have sat through classes that we found boring/useless/etc, but we stuck to it. I didn't mean to insult your intelligence. My brother couldn't do the college thing either, and he is very intelligent, and is on his way to being very successful.

BTW - your TA's crack problem had absolutely nothing to do with philosophy. It had to do with crack. There are enough philosophy majors who aren't on crack to debunk that theory before it even starts.
You say you are not insulting my intelligence yet you say in the very next sentence that you had a brother that could not do the college thing either. This would be insulting to anyone that chose not to pursue a college degree. There are other ways to pursue knowledge. I not only had the intellectual ability and the financial ability to put myself through college, I had artistic ability and was an accomplished artist in High School. I was an accomplished athlete. as well, participating in both the soccor program and the long distance running program of my High School. I have also learned a very complicated language, Japanese, and was learning to write it as well, in college. Japanese and Chinese are among the least known languages of the world and are very hard to master.

Intelligence or ability have nothing to do with the reason I or any other individuals leave college. Sometimes you even hear people say that it is not interesting or challenging enough. This is how I felt. I was very excited to take psycology and philosophy. I enjoyed psycology and did very well in that class. I even found flaws in their theories. I was required to take philosophy in order to advance to higher courses in engineering and or accounting. I had no other desire to pursue any other degree. I left because I refused to pay for any more philosophy courses in order to get to the more advanced courses of engineering. It was a hard decision to make. I was excited about college and wanted to go further, but refused to pay for a person to teach lies.

I chose to jump into the real world and start making money. I found that many businesses did not require a degree and would in fact pay for college if I chose to pursue that course again. Not going to college has nothing to do with intelligence or the lack thereof. Anyone can take one class at a time and finish college sooner or later.

And in the exact same sentence says that his brother is very intelligent and on his way to being successful, and that therefore, just because you did not get a college degree does not mean you are not intelligent or not successful.

Why do you think the Church puts such emphasis on getting an education (at a college and all) if they thought education hurts people?
Why do you think Bill Gates dropped out of Princeton his second year, in order to pursue a higher knowledge of computers and computer programming? The answer is that the college courses being taught there were out dated and needed revising and updating. His mind was way ahead of the "old school" stuff being taught at that university. He was way ahead of the knowledge that was being taught and was aquiring his own knowledge of computers and computer programming.

We must always be in pursuit of knowledge. Bill Gates is still learning and he himself speaks of this. He says that he can never stop learning in order to stay ahead of the competition.

This is what the Church is talking about. We must always be in the pursuit of knowledge and education in whatever form it takes. Why limit yourself to a college course or a college textbook, which may be outdated. There are people that have developed faster computers that live here in Utah. They have never been to college. I have a link to there company. They offer couses in computers and computer programming that are far beyond any computer course in college. College courses can be outdated quickly. We need to be ever learning.

I chose to leave college for another very important reason. That was to spend as much time studying the standard works of the church as well as the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible in order to get answers to much more important eternal questions that Ihad nagging at me in my mind. I was able to find every answer to every eternal question I had floating around in my mind. Education is important but not at the expense of our eternal education.

And I followed my comment about my brother by saying that I find that he is very intelligent - just not a school person.

Well, somehow I'm able to do both. And for some reason it's important enough that the Church encourages to go out and get an education, instead of spending all our time boxed up in our rooms reading the standard works every waking moment of the day.

Probably becuase he found that his philosophy course was evil.

If I was so unintelligent, as you may all suppose, then how is it that I am not dependent on a mechanic or a computer expert to fix my car or computer. I do not go to mechanics and I do not go to computer technicians nor do I call a plumber or an electrician to fix minor and major problems, unless I am too tired to fix it myself. I have worked on every aspect of a car and can repair my own computer, as well as, every aspect of my home, from the sheet rocking to the shingles to the electrical wiring to the plumbing. I have remodeled 5 houses including the plumbing and light elecrical aspects of the home. I redid the lights and all the switches and plugs and replaced sinks and tubs as well as the plumbing that went along with it. I am very well accomplished in many aspects of knowledge of everyday life. The last time I had someone install something for me was over ten years ago. Sears had a sale on a water heater, installation included. The last time I went to a mechanic was 15 years ago. I was stranded and had no other choice. I had no way to go get the part or do it myself.

This post is only to prove my intelligence, has nothing to do with what I am talking about. I am highly intelligent and have scored highly on an internet IQ test. The fact that I have rejected philosophy has nothing to do with my intelligence. It was offensive to my spirit. I am specifically talking about the philosophy courses taught in universities across the United States. They are a waste of time. They teach things we already know to be true or false. They are only teaching truth mixed with lies.

You gave philosophy one chance and that was it. Why are you so against everything? That's what I want to know. Maybe I should start a thread, oh, and internet IQ tests???? That's not a good way to test your IQ.

I am only boxed up here now because I was involved in a bad motorcycle accident and almost lost my foot. I had internal injuries in my chest area and could not turn over in bed without serious pain. This is why I started coming here. I could do nothing more than lay here in bed. I am still confined to laying here because my foot is still numb and swollen after five months and only gets worse if I walk on it. I do not spend every waking hour doing any one thing and I never have. It may seem that way because I am now unable to do anything but lay here for now. The tissue throughout my foot was damaged and almost destroyed, blood vessels included. I have to simply wait for it to completely heal before I can walk on it.

One question, is everything about you and how much you are this and how much you are that? No offense.

So did you have this motorcycle accident right before you quit college because of your philosophy class to study the standard works? Because if not, that entire paragraph is moot.

Kids, play nice. The debate ended 8 pages ago....ffh's personal (and biblical) reasons for hating philosophy are unintelligable and definition of such are so far factually left unstated. I can guarantee another 100 pages of inquiry will not change this nor evoke a rational explanation from him/her.

I don't box myself in with anything. In fact I am the total opposite. I have many skills and can accomplish almost any task I set my mind to do. I do not just sit around reading scriptures and I certainly do not spend time reading the philosophies of men. I love to study a wide range of subjects. Have you ever read an entire car manuel? You know the ones that they sell at auto zone. The big thick ones, not the small manuel you get when you buy a car. I have read several of them almost all the way through and have performed almost all the repairs that are written in there. This is only one aspect of my learning. I do many things just because I want to learn more. I build and fly radio controlled gliders. I ski, water ski, golf, and have spent a lot of time off road high in the mountains on off road bikes (motorcycles) I have spent many hours snowmobiling as well. I spent most of my childhood helping my father build a cabin in a remote spot. I was hardly boxed in ever in my life as you say Aqualung. I have had many experiences including spending about 10 days in Europe and then going back and spending 40 more days there touring about 300 miles a day or more. I also worked for Delta airlines and spent time in Hawaii, Atlanta and Colorado. All airfare free, compliments of Delta airlines.

Why would I want to spend my precious time studying the philosophies of men. This will not help me in my eternal progression.

I'd rather be skiing.

Are those not the things of man, though? Would your God want you wasting your time not focusing on the spiritual, or is my sarcasm not apparent enough?

Why would I want to study the philosophies of men and stoop to their level. I want to move to a higher level of thinking. This is faith.

Why would I even spend time talking about jibberish when I could be enjoying the beauty and awesomness of the Uinta mountains on an off road bike (motorcycle) or on skiis. I have spent many days and hours doing both. I even purchased a interconnect pass once in which you can ski from one resort to the next. It is an awesome experience seeing the almost endless array of mountain ranges. Being high in a mountain range is a great faith building experience. Just sitting around talking about certain theories will only tear your faith down and in some cases bring it to a point where you deny that God exists.
