Faith is something we choose to have.
Faith is taking Jesus at His word, and obeying what He says.
We get faith by hearing God's Word.
Katie, my dear, methinks you have a somewhat vague idea of what constitutes faith, or the definition thereof. Faith, how you see it, is actually the secondary definition of the term. The primary definition of “faith” is: complete trust or confidence in someone or something.
The faith in which you refer to is derived from the secondary definition found within the Oxford dictionary.
The thing is, I agree faith is inherent in the human race. After all, throughout our daily routines we operate constantly on faith, often without even realizing it. Faith in the supernatural, however, is a different animal altogether. While faith may be inherent within us, it takes a lifetime of religious indoctrination and an exceedingly unhealthy suspension of perspicacity in order to translate that faith into one of a dogmatic adherence to fables, myths and fairy tales written by unknown men from cultures far removed from ours by both a immense distance in time and insurmountable difference in culture.
Now, with that in mind, some, many folks have redirected their faith into an organized religion of some sorts, as you have done with regard to Christianity. In short Katie, your faith is natural. Your faith in God and Jesus, however, is both part choice, part indoctrination. No word (if any word even exists) from God (if such an entity even exists) is necessary.
