So how would gun laws help law abiding gun owners from perpetrating these horrible crimes?
It would depend upon the gun laws enacted of course. Laws like they have in German where one can buy guns (not guys:facepalm:) and own them but have to store them at gun clubs would make such crimes much more difficult. So would banning high velocity rounds (I find the term "high powered" too confusing) and also banning large magazines. Yes, there would be some existing ones out there, but owners would be very reluctant to sell them.)

Twilight, not bright nor dark, good nor bad.
Lets just try to see where posters here stand on guns.
I'm OK with some restrictions, like only bolt or breach firearms that limit rate of fire to prevent mass killings by volume.

Assault style is ok as well as its just what it implies, a style and not the real thing.

I feel anything more powerful should be available to civilians, including machine guns, but must be kept in an arms room much like they do in the military where it can be checked in and out by the owner and the owner only.

I also would restrict conceal carry, and only allow it under special circumstances. Otherwise open carry must be mandatory for all others.

I'd return to secured weapons kept in full window view like closed (locked) gunracks, and all weapons must be fully cleared while inside a vehicle without special permits that allow a loaded weapon inside a vehicle.

Background checks should remain the same as they are now.

Thats my compromise if I had any power to do so.

IMO,, here are a lot of people who shouldn't own guns. .

  • More than 50% will be diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder at some point in their lifetime.
  • 1 in 5 Americans will experience a mental illness in a given year.
  • 1 in 5 children, either currently or at some point during their life, have had a seriously debilitating mental illness.
  • 1 in 25 Americans lives with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression.

And make it illegal for Christian hating mentally ill people to kill children at school!

There's no evidence that mental illness is a major cause of mass shootings, and studies have shown that mentally ill people make up a small portion of perpetrators of mass shootings. For example:

The reality is that people with mental illness account for a very small proportion of perpetrators of mass shootings in the U.S., says Ragy Girgis, MD, associate professor of clinical psychiatry in the Columbia University Department of Psychiatry and the New York State Psychiatric Institute.
In 2021, Dr. Girgis, an expert in severe mental illness, and colleagues from Columbia’s Center of Prevention and Evaluation authored the first report on mass shootings using the Columbia Mass Murder Database (CMMD), which examined the relationship between serious mental illness and mass shootings.

Also:

Recent mass shootings have inevitably led to news reports of the suspected shooters' mental health, but psychological research shows there is no clear link between mental illness and violence. In this episode, clinical and forensic psychologist Joel Dvoskin, PhD, talks about the misconceptions surrounding mental illness and violent behavior and how basic prevention efforts could help stop future violent events.

Mental illness already carries a social stigma that sometimes presents a roadblock against access to proper mental health care, so it seems to me that assuming mentally ill people are a major source of mass shootings despite evidence to the contrary only adds to the stigma and doesn't address the main causes of the problem.

Responsible gun owner here.
I want more laws to make sure people with mental illness or children don't get hold of them. Background checks, requirements for gun safe, etc. I don't know enough about "assault" rifles to decide if I want a ban. Our handguns are semi-automatic, so I don't know if it's any worse to have a semi-automatic rifle.

We should include spiritual sickness. Soul sickness! The man who killed the kids in Tennessee was being treated for emotional problems.

Yet Tennessee law allowed the gun purchases nonetheless. What kind of soul sickless in legislators allows gun purchases by people having emotional problems? What kind of soul sickness is it when conservatives refuse to work to limit access to deadly weapons?

Yes, but some mental disorders are treatable. And what if someone gets the gun, then is later diagnosed? It's so hard an issue to do something about this late in the game.

Really? Its not good practice shooting these with a pistol or shotgun. To name a few...

Deer
Wild hog
Bear
Coyote
Elk
Etc
The same applies to childen in schools, according to the gun selections of mass shooters. So you have that in common with them.

How would the gun seller know that a person is seeing a doctor for emotional problems?

Did you know it’s against the law to murder people with a gun?

Fentanyl is totally illegal in America. But his is it here and killing people?

"There's no evidence that mental illness is a major cause of mass shootings"

So are you saying sound minded people commit them?

Is it sound minded to go on a mass shooting spree?
