The Japanese are mostly secular, who follow a combination of native Shinto, Zen/Mahayana Buddhism, and Christianity, as I have heard.
Buddhism originated in India, and the form that's likely closest to the Buddha's original teachings, Theravada Buddhism, is very much ascetic and world-renouncing. AFAIK, this form of Buddhism has barely any presence in Japan.
BTW, I'm a bit of an otaku, so I'm very much aware of the sexual standards of Japan. :yes:
Genital penetration is not the only form of sexual expression.
Christianity did not influence Japanese much. They have no problem aborting baby if they have unwanted pregnancy..

I did not understand why Americans have such big problem with the abortion when I was a non-believer. I am from Japan.
And Japanese have no problem with porn either.
They also dont have much problem that husbands make lover outside of their marriage. Women accept it without much of problem.
But they hardly have gays in Japanese society.

Yes, I know. The Christian elements that I've seen from Japan primarily appear in some rituals(such as weddings), and the concept of heaven and hell frequently being referred to in anime, as well as a Kami-sama the characters occasionally pray to. (Side note: there's a FANTASTIC arc of Rurouni Kenshin that tells a the story of an underground Christian sect in a heavily fictionalized early Meiji Japan.)

One of the things Japan is known for among the American otaku community is extremely weird porn.
