Race riots in England

You know what made me sad about the video? That people were stopping cars and saying a person wasn't white enough or whatever. My biracial daughter, who is half black and half white, is totally an Anglophile and she wouldn't be considered white enough to pass, but her kids, who are 1/4 African American and 3/4 white might - well, two of the four would. It's sad.

It is sad, in fact it’s heartbreaking. But please don’t think these thugs and hooligans represent our country.

Britain is generally a tolerant place, but years of gaslighting about immigration from unscrupulous politicians and media, coupled with communities left behind in a post industrial economy, has led an angry minority to bring shame on us all.

This is a lesson in where ‘Stop The Boats’, or ‘Build The Wall’ type rhetoric can lead the angry and the gullible.

Cultural assimilation is not silly.
The suggestion is that this isn't naked racism is though.

Cultural assimilation wouldn't make a blind bit of difference to the people nazi saluting, stopping and attacking people in the street who aren't white, attempting arson at hotels housing asylum seekers, throwing bricks at Muslims outside mosques.

I know why the far right hide behind terms like cultural assimilation. Saying outright they are xenophobic doesn't play so well in public. Masking their vile attitudes in dog whistles does fool the terminally gullible, however.

Likely part of the problem if you think that is all there is to British culture.
Nigel Farage, the 'champion of brexit' and UK's political representative of the far-right, purposely
portrayed himself as a typical Englishman, consuming a pint of beer in his local.

Personally, I have no problem with people drinking beer .. as long as people behave themselves, of course.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.

Oh, don't worry, not thinking anything bad about your country in general, just about the thugs.

Yes, that is part of assimilation. Learning to tolerant the behavior of other cultures.

I've never heard of the idea of cultural assimilation being an expression owned by the political right. What I do hear is the idea of racial identity as an explanation for behavior from both the left and the right as you are doing here.

This does nothing to resolve the problem. In fact it only makes it worse. The more you identify people by some arbitrary "racial" feature, the more divided they become. History should have made this obvious but I suppose some people are still learning.

They're out harassing people based on their skin colour.

It is truly a rare achievement to be missing the mark this widely. Spectacularly obtuse.

Bull. I've been spat and attacked for dating a black guy. My children are mixed race, i was beaten to the ground while there was a failed attempt on their lives. One of the reasons we left England it to escape the racist attitude in Britain, which incidentally has increased since Brexit.

Brexit 'major influence' in racism and hate crime rise

Double bull, always brexits to blame, always anything other than what the problem is.

I have lived most of my 63 years in London, and I don't see what you see. But then, the history of London is a history of immigration; migrant communities from all over the world living side by side with the locals, many of whom are descended from immigrants themselves (many of my own family are 2nd and 3rd generation Irish immigrants). For the most part, it works well.

Come and have a proper look round, I'd be happy to show you. I can even take you round parts of Hackney where ultra orthodox Jews live right next door to a large Bangladeshi community, respectfully and with no obvious tensions. A lot of those English people who fear immigrants the most, seem to be those who've never met any.

I suggest visiting edgeware Wembley Harlesden southall, there’s plenty to see, they’re not the problem, the problem is unfettered immigration illegal or otherwise, what labour are now going to give is amnesty for thousands of illegals who will cost us millions in money and resources,we should be more like Poland.

Those are legitimate concerns

However political violence is not a legitimate course of action

And I think that a great many of those involved in the disorder are committed racists and are driven by different motivations

There are racists out there for sure, there’s racism between cultures too,the whole of Europe is on fire, the problem is unfettered immigration illegal or otherwise, too many unskilled unchecked benefit dependents and people have had enough,it doesn’t make everyone a racist.

This country has enough people to care for,I see it every day in the charity I work for, homeless people, working people who cannot afford food or even clothing,5000 people died because of cold homes last winter, elderly people are more likely to die when it’s below 4 degs, the number will increase this year because labour have taken away the cold weather payment for oaps so two tier kier and labour must be proud of themselves.

You mean like the conservatives who took away cold weather payments for brits living abroad?
And froze pension increases too.
Yes they can all **** on the little fella. But this thread is all about racism

There definitely are and shame on them for that, violence is no way to resolve this mess but there are more with legitimate concerns of mass immigration.

This is a fact, local councils are handing out tents and sleeping bags to the homeless now, meanwhile illegal immigrants are being given hotel rooms, maybe you can see why people have had enough and a prime minister who has already lost control.

I suggest getting a grip mate, you’re starting to sound hysterical, and we know where that leads.

If you think immigration is the reason for record homelessness, you’ve been lied to. Decades of right wing economic policy has brought our country to it’s knees, not Muslims and brown people. Selling off all the council houses and turning the housing market into an investors casino is the primary cause of homelessness. Whilst free market fundamentalism has led to stagnant wages and underfunded public services; those same public services wouldn’t function at all without immigrant workers btw, but I suspect you must know that.
