The Kindness Box

An act of kindness is a spontaneous gesture of goodwill towards someone or something - our fellow humans, the animal kingdom, and the kingdom of nature. Kind words and deeds come from a state of benevolence, generated by a core response deep within all of us. When we carry out an act of kindness it is a message from one heart to another, an act of love, an unspoken "I care" statement.

While you may not realise it, you are performing many acts of kindness each day. Such things as smiling and greeting people in a friendly manner, whether they be friends, associates or total strangers. A kind act can be sincerely complimenting someone about their hair, eyes, smile, laugh, an item of clothing or jewellery, their positive outlook, their caring attitude, or something they do or have done well. It can be helping someone on or off with their coat, opening a door, saying please, thank you, excuse me, and other common courtesies that unfortunately are not very common these days. It can be giving your total attention to people when they are talking, it can be offering support to someone who has a problem, it can be helping to heal a rift. Or it can be not doing something. For example, refraining from such things as gossiping, finding fault, or making negative judgements.

"You'll never change the world by telling people what they should or shouldn't do. Teach by example - be living proof of the joys of kindness. People's admiration will be such, that they'll fall over themselves to emulate you."

The power of a simple compliment is one of the most under-estimated acts of kindness that anyone can do. A thoughtful compliment can turn someones rough day at work into a bright one, can make a child smile after being bullied or even give someone the boost of self-confidence they needed to conquer their struggles. They are easy and free. And get this, studies show that receiving a compliment has the same positive effects as receiving cash.

Healing comes from within. This is the conclusion of Dr. Steven Weiss who has practiced osteopathic medicine for the past 30 years. Using a wide range of modalities and traditions, Dr. Weiss has made it his aim to help people access the energies within to find their way to healing. By "Getting out of the way" he allows the healing energy to become accessible through him to those hidden places where disease gets in the way of health. "One of the major dilemmas of treating people with pain, and especially chronic pain, is that the source of the problem is almost never where it hurts." He teaches deep listening as a powerful tool to get to the source of pain for healing patients' bodies, to calm their minds, and to support their own healing. Ultimately, he helps patients to "re-member" themselves and become connected with their inmost selves once again. Writer Patty de Llosa shares more from Weiss' journey.

In April 2008, Dr. Wayne Dyer and Ellen Degeneres challenged viewers to participate in a “Month of Doing Good” as a way of helping with depression. According to Dyer, millions of people take anti-depressants to increase their serotonin levels, an important hormone which reduces symptoms of depression, thus increasing a sense of well-being. A person who does something nice for someone else experiences a “feel good” effect from doing a good deed. Studies are showing that doing an act of kindness actually results in a health benefit which can actually be measured in an increase of serotonin. Of further interest, an act of kindness also raises the levels of the recipient, but also anyone who simply witnessed the good deed!

Over the years, Ellen DeGeneres has raised tens of millions of dollars for causes close to her heart. And she uses her daytime talk show as both a way to raise and distribute those funds. Last night, Ellen was honored at the People’s Choice Awards with the award for Choice Humanitarian.

In the lead up to her award, the show gave a brief rundown of the individual causes she’s supported.

She’s raised $12.5 million for breast cancer research, $10 million for survivors of Hurricane Katrina; she’s given $1.7 million to schools, $21.6 to charity, and $35 million to her own viewers in need. That’s all pretty amazing and borderline unbelievable.
