College Orders Student to Alter Religious Views on Homosexuality, Or Be Dismissed

I disagree with my teachers all the time in college. Most of them are idiots. They teach their bias. I bring them back to earth. If I got kicked out of school for that, I would consider that ridiculous and inappropriate. I mean, they're teachers. If she doesn't understand homosexuality, shouldn't they teach her? Couldn't the teacher say, "Well, I'm gay. I didn't choose to be gay. Let me tell you about my experience."

Ku Klux Klan plans rally for ASU student's rights | The Augusta Chronicle
Bobby Spurlock, who identified himself as imperial wizard knighthawk and grand dragon of South Carolina and North Carolina, said the KKK has met with school officials and plans to protest the school's treatment of 24-year-old Jennifer Keeton on Oct. 23 from 1 to 4 p.m. Klan members will be in full dress across from the school's main Walton Way entrance in the median at Fleming Avenue.

*giggle*

The million-dollar question now is: will Keeton start complaining that she doesn't want to be associated with bigots? :p

It would be better to read about the case first. I'm sure the teacher could say that, but it's not going to make any difference. The whole problem is that she refused to take a sort of class to teach her about homosexuality. They offered it to her as a way for her to get her degree, but she declined.

Oh ok. Yeah I didn't read the case. In light of this, well, I've taken a lot of classes I didn't care to take, understanding I would have to to get through school. I'm sure part of the curriculum wasn't going to require her to have sex with a woman to pass.

Haha, yeah, that would be one hell of a requirement. That's definitely one requirement I wouldn't have minded when I was in college. Giggity!

I did have a class where I had to pick a girl I thought was especially physically attractive and invite her to come to my class. I was then required to sit with her in front of the class and explain to them what I thought was beautiful about her appearance. She then had to explain to them what she thinks is attractive in a guy.

We ended up going out a few times, but that's it. She turned out to be really awkward.

Dude, what class was that? "Get Over Yourself in Three Easy Steps?" Talk about having to overcome fear of rejection. :D

It's always a good thing that we can trust the KKK to stand up for our right to be idiots and jerks.

However they were not requiring her to take a class because it was part of the curriculum but becuase they didn't like her religious beliefs.

No, they were requiring her to take the class because it's part of the curriculum to not refuse to treat gay people and to not tell them that what they're doing is wrong.

Ordering someone to change their religious views on homosexuality? Since when can you legislate morality in such a ham-fisted fashion? So what happens when this farce swings into high-gear with Christians being faced with dismissal for not openly renouncing their faith?

You should really read at least some of the thread before posting nonsense like this.

Her major is a special one with special rules. She is going to be counseling children and teenagers. If she wants to do that, she needs to show that she can do it in a professional and non-biased way. No one is legislating morality. She's welcome to go into IT or English or Science or many other fields and get a degree without having to change anything about her stupid beliefs on homosexuality or anything else. But when you choose a field and a major, you need to meet the requirements for that major. That's all they're asking of her.

Yes she should lose her case completely. There are guidelines and expectations, if she doesn't meet them then too bad. You can't join any political party you want, you have to meet their criteria and if you don't, tough luck.

As a Counsellor, you can't hold views which are discriminitory or prejudiced. You're in a trusted position, people trust you to not judge them and to help them. How can you expect to help other people if you look down on them and condem them?

Yep she should lose.

*sigh* Her religion has nothing to do about. It's the fact that she is wanting to be a high school councilor and she has stated that she has every intention of telling gays and transgendered patients they are wrong, going through a phase, and will go to hell if they don't stop. As a councilor your CAN'T do that. Even if a patient comes to you and says "I raped a school bus full of children, executed everyone at a nursing home, and poisoned all the neighborhood animals" you can't pass judgment or treat them any differently because of this. In this profession that person is just as good/bad as an individual that donates half of her paychecks to the homeless, spends 20 hours a week at a soup kitchen, teaches literacy to children and adults, and takes time to visit lonely people on holidays. It isn't for a councilor or therapist to pass judgment. It's unethical and something you are taught in basic 101 classes.
