"I Heard You Mormons...."

Joseph Smith was impressive with the no smoking rule - but - the jury is still out on warm (coffee & Tea) beverages. There appears to be a a percentage of health benefits associated with both - according to some studies. The benefits may outweigh the negative effects.

As far as the Mormon church goes - I had Elders come speak to me at my home six times and attended a service. Some of the nicest people I have ever met - the LDS church is doing something right to produce such good people with it's teachings in my eyes. Not perfect of course - Racist attitudes existed until only a short time ago within it's history - and - within the first few pages of the Holy Book.. God threatens to destroy Joseph Smith if he gives the location of the Gold Plates... Like the God he is said to be 'Yahweh' - not a God I would follow in the end.

I ran into some Mormon missionaries a couple of years ago, at a time when I was heavily exploring Buddhism.

They approached me as I was on the way to turn in some job applications. I asked if they were from LDS. They said that they were. I politely informed them that I had my own faith, and showed them a medallion I wore.

"Oh," one said. "Are you a Buddhist?"

"Yes," I replied, since it was close to true at the time.

"That's a beautiful medallion. Have a nice day."

I disagree with the theology, and I'm angry over their involvement in Prop 8, but I have no issues with LDS as a whole, especially when it comes to their missionaries.

There is no sensationalism. You implied tea has negative effects and I was ignoring those and if tea is so good for you then why do Utah Mormons live longer?

Tea has negative effects... What tea? As stated there are 1000s of kinds made from all varieties of plants. The act of running hot water through plants of any kind has negative effects on the human body?

And what would the correlation be to life expectancy? People who do not consume hot water that has been filtered through plant material of any variety live longer?

What negative effects am I ignoring and what teas have these properties?

You're continuing along the same lines. I never said tea will make you die faster.

You're continuing along the same lines. I never said tea will make you die faster.

Lets refresh:

There are known negative consequences for drinking coffee and tea, but feel free to ignore those too.

Shall we start quoting stats about how much healthier Utah Mormons are then the rest of the country?

You said there are known negative consequences of drinking "tea".

You then offer to post stats on how much healthier Utah mormons are then the rest of the country.

So lets hear the known negative consequences that exist for consuming hot water that has passed through any of the 1000s of kinds of plants that could be used to make the drink "tea".

For instance we could make tea from cherry bark and seeds that would be poisonious and would likely kill a person but this affect is not seen with say green tea or white tea for obvious reasons. Nor does the act of passing hot water over the bark and seeds serve as the component that makes it dangerous. If one were to simply consume the bark and seeds without passing hot water over them to make tea they would still likely die. Normally the ingredients in tea are not poisonious. (Thats not to say people don't drink cherry tea though and they do so in a safe fashion)

Claiming that all teas share common negative affects and thats why you avoid drinking them is simply untrue.

Also I do not see how you would prove Utah Mormons are healthier then other americans. Do you have a catalog of health? How do you define health? The CDC sends out a questioniarre asking if your healthy and whatever you say they record and relate to longevity rates, income levels, education levels etc etc. Based on their latest finding the healthiest state is vermont. But regardless, lets say you could prove utah mormons are the healthist in the US. Two points:

What does that have to do with your claim that all teas have negative consequences.
How would it show that their healthier because they don't drink tea?

Would perhaps not smoking and not drinking be a better explanation and more accurately account for it? And last time I checked when it comes to health the USA is not a shining beacon for others to follow.

Again the only reason I can see it being brought up is as the genesis of a rationalization process to make sense of something that made sense when Joe said it all those years ago but now seems like little more the superstition. IMHO

You continue to do it.

I never claimed "all teas."

Since you continue to assert that I said things I didn't, I see no point in continuing.

LOL. I have asked you to define tea. I was merely defining TEA for you - not asserting that you said it. You can plainly see me quoting you.

Are there some hot teas mormons are allowed?

My point in stating all teas is indicate we are talking about hot water poured over some type of plant matter that is normally trapped in a bag and then is steeped to make a steaming glass of tea.

If you want to state we are not talking about all teas then explain what you are talking about since you made the original statement and are the subject matter expert here on all things mormon and tea related. ;)

Do you make or sell tea for a living? Is your livelihood somehow based on the tea industry? I mean unless you are planning on opening a tea store in Utah, who cares?

Basically because I was accused of ignoring the negative consequences of consuming tea. To prove this point I was asked by watchmen if he should start posting links that prove utah mormons are healthier then other americans as if that had something to do with the choice to consume or to not consume tea.

In addition I also find it utter nonsense and superstition.

And not that anyone has asked me about my feelings but I happen to like to tea and will not stand idly by while it is villified and attacked without mercy.

Who speaks for Orange Pekoe? You? What about ginseng? And Apple Cider!!!! BLUEBERRY?!?!?!?!

Who will defend this beverage of mighty nutrition and powerful antioxidants?

Your words. Not mine.

You did not specify and refuse to answer. Your just being argumentative. I've asked you to clarify your statement and anyone reading this thread can see what little you've said so its hard to make the argument that I am unjustly putting words in your mouth when I have asked you over and over to explain what you are talking about and have clearly quoted what you said.

There are known negative consequences for drinking coffee and tea, but feel free to ignore those too.

Me said:
My point is tea even hot tea is regarded for most as healthy and a powerful source of antioxidants. Further what is hot tea? There about 1000 varieties from every flavor and range from decaf to high caf.

Then I salute you my tea crusading friend. Perhaps you could write a book “The Tea Delusion”.

Since you brought up the black people issue. I have confess I have never met a black mormon. Have any of yall?

Yes. I have a friend (met her on the internet) who is a black convert to the Church. She isn't the only black Mormon I have met, but the only one I know well. And then, of course, Gladys Knight, is LDS.

I have had three black roommates - all of them Mormon. I have one right now. I also have some good friends who are black and Mormon. I can think of at least six off the top of my head. It is too bad that I can count them though.

Gladys Knight it probably the most famous black Mormon. She is doing a lot for diversity in the church. Here is a website with a choir that she started in the church to promote diversity. I love this devotional that she gave at BYU: Special Message NEW
